Are you wondering “Is there Uber in Europe?” I’m gonna help you figure it out!

Uber is the most widely used taxi app in the world and these days it’s a lot of people’s number one go-to option for getting around.

As a solo female traveller, I certainly feel safer if I can use Uber rather than just flagging down a random taxi in a city I don’t know.

When I’m helping people to plan their trips around Europe, I often get asked “Can you use Uber in Europe?” or even “Is Uber illegal in Europe?”.

A lot of people are under the impression that Uber is banned in Europe, but that isn’t true! I’ve also seen a lot of misinformation online claiming that you can use Uber all over Europe, which is also far from the truth!

The truth is that Uber is popular across Europe but unfortunately, it doesn’t operate in every European country and city. Europe is a big place after all!

I decided to write this guide to Uber in Europe so that there is finally some accurate information out there.

I’ve done a ton of research, as well as used my own personal experience of using Uber in multiple countries and cities across Europe, to create a definitive list of where Uber operates in Europe.

So let’s dive into it!

🚗 If Uber does not exist in the country you want to visit then consider renting a car instead!

Is Uber Available In Europe?

The short answer is yes, there is Uber in Europe. However, it’s not that simple!

Uber is available in many popular European travel destinations but there are also many places where it does not exist yet.

There are 19 countries in Europe where Uber does not operate and in the 30 countries in Europe where Uber does operate, it is not always available in every city.

Below I’ve listed Every country in Europe in alphabetical order. For each country, I’ve clearly stated whether you can use Uber there or not.

For countries with Uber, I have listed which cities it operates in, and for countries without Uber, I have listed different taxi apps and alternatives to Uber. If you scroll to the bottom of the list there’s a handy colour-coded map for easy reference.

I’ve also created this free, helpful cheat sheet that you can download as a PDF and use as a quick reference guide when planning your travels around Europe.

Check the alphabetical list of countries in Europe to find the country you want to travel to.

    Is There Uber In Albania?

No, Uber does not exist in Albania.

I spent a month backpacking around Albania and quickly realised that its transport infrastructure isn’t great.

However, there are a few good Uber alternatives that operate in the capital city of Tirana, as well as a handful of other cities.

👀 Check out this guide If you are struggling to get around Albania without a car

    Alternatives to Uber in Albania

Speed taxi app – The most popular taxi app in Albania

Ups taxi app – This app is very similar to Uber and is probably the best alternative

Taxi.al app – There are set prices of 250 Lek (~€2) for up to 1.5 km and then 85 LEK (~€0.75) per km after that.

Try hitchhiking – It’s extremely common in Albania and is part of the culture!

    Is There Uber In Belarus?

Yes, there is Uber in Belarus but similar to Azerbaijan, the regular Uber app won’t work – instead, you will need to download the Uber BY app.

In 2022 Uber announced that it would be cutting ties with Belarus and Russia. At the time of writing (June 2023) the Uber BY app is still available on the app store, so I’m assuming it is still in operation in Belarus.

If anyone has any more up-to-date info about this then please contact me and I will update this article.

    Is There Uber In Bulgaria?

No, Uber is banned in Bulgaria. The official reason for the ban is safety concerns but actually, it is much more likely to be for tax reasons.

There is an alternative taxi app that you can use in Sofia. I didn’t personally use it when I was in Bulgaria. I chose to rent a car with some friends instead, this turned out to be a much cheaper option than getting taxis.

    Alternatives to Uber in Bulgaria

TaxiMe – Reliable and you can pay by credit card

    Is There Uber In Croatia?

Yes, Uber is available in Croatia and operates in multiple cities across the country. I used Uber to get to the airport in Zagreb and had no problems with it.

    Is There Uber In Cyprus?

Although there is some debate about whether Cyprus is in Europe or The Middle East, I decided to include it in this list anyway as it is a popular holiday destination and is easily accessible from Europe.

No, Uber does not operate in Cyprus or North Cyprus. This is mainly because the government sets taxi tariffs in Cyprus.

    Alternatives to Uber in Cyprus

Bolt – Bolt is popular all over Europe and is often cheaper than Uber, I’ve used it in many different countries and always had a good experience. It’s one of the top rated taxi apps in Europe.

Cabcy – This app has live tracking just like Uber.

    Is There Uber In Denmark?

No, Uber stopped operating in Denmark in 2017 due to new taxi laws that made it difficult for the company to continue its operations. However, there are still alternative taxi apps available in Denmark.

Copenhagen is a modern city and extremely popular with tourists so it’s quite strange that there is no Uber in Copenhagen.

    Alternatives to Uber in Denmark

Taxa 4×35 – This is the biggest taxi company in Copenhagen and you can order a cab via their app

Viggo – This is a small company with only about 100 cars but I love them for the fact that the company only uses zero-emission vehicles!

    Is There Uber In France?

One question I get asked a lot is “Can I use my Uber app in Paris?” and the answer is Yes!

Uber is the best taxi app in Paris. I used Uber several times during my trip to Paris and had no problems using the app or experiencing long waiting times, even in the busy areas around the Eiffel Tower.

Uber is also available in many other cities throughout France.

    Alternatives to Uber in Georgia

Bolt – European-wide ride-sharing app that is often cheaper than Uber

Yandex Taxi – Russian taxi app (available outside of Russia too) that is slightly cheaper than Bolt. I’ve heard that some people have problems connecting Apple Pay to the Yandex app though.

No. Uber was banned in Hungary in 2016 so you will not find Uber in Budapest or any other Hungarian city.

    Alternatives to Uber in Hungary

Bolt – The most popular ride-sharing app in Hungary. It is available in many cities.

Taxis in Hungary are required to be yellow regardless of what company they are operated by. So don’t be surprised if a yellow cab turns up when you order a ride on Bolt.

    Is There Uber In Iceland?

No, Uber is not available in Iceland. Although it has been discussed for some time, there are no plans to bring Uber to Iceland at present.

    Alternatives to Uber in Iceland

Getting a taxi in Iceland is not a good idea as it will be very expensive. Even a taxi from the airport to Reykjavik city centre is not advised. Public transport outside of the capital city can also be unreliable.

The best option for getting around in Iceland is to rent a car and drive yourself.

    Is There Uber In Italy?

Yes, there is Uber in Italy! I’ve been scammed by taxi drivers in Italy with ‘broken meters’ more times than I can count, so now I try to only ever use Uber when I’m there.

    Is There Uber In Kosovo?

No, there is no Uber in Kosovo.

When I stayed in Kosovo’s capital Pristina, I had difficulty communicating with taxi drivers (because I didn’t have my hotel’s address written in Cyrillic!) so I tried to find an app similar to Uber where I could simply input my destination but sadly these kind of apps don’t seem to exist in Kosovo.

You also can’t hail a cab on the side of the street. You will need to book a taxi via phone or go to a designated taxi rank.

My advice is to make sure you have your destination written down in both the Latin alphabet and in the Cryllic alphabet before you book your taxi.

    Alternatives to Uber in Kosovo

There are currently no taxi apps available in Kosovo. To book a cab you need to call a local taxi company directly or go to a designated taxi rank.

The library in Pristina Kosovo is considered to be one of the ugliest buildings in the world. It is a great example of brutalist architecture

    Is There Uber In Latvia?

No, Uber does not operate in Latvia, so you will not be able to order an Uber in Riga or anywhere else in the country.

    Alternatives to Uber in Latvia

Bolt – The main app-based taxi service in Latvia with over 3,000 vehicles across the country. Bolt is extremely popular in the Baltic countries and is a cheap and reliable alternative to Uber.

    Is There Uber In Liechtenstein?

No, Uber is not available in Liechtenstein.

    Alternatives to Uber in Liechtenstein

Bolt is also unavailable so you will need to order a taxi directly from a local taxi company.

    Is There Uber In Lithuania?

Yes, there is Uber in Lithuania. However, it can be difficult to get a ride. I have personally experienced long wait times for an Uber in Vilnius and have heard from other people that it can be almost impossible at certain times.

I think it’s better to use Bolt in Lithuania as there always seem to be more Bolt drivers available than Uber drivers.

    Is There Uber In Monaco?

No, Uber is not available in Monaco due to legal restrictions. However, you can take an Uber from Nice, France to drive into Monaco.

The laws have changed recently (April 2023) so there may be the possibility of Uber operating in Monaco in the near future.

    Alternatives to Uber in Monaco

There is a Monaco taxi app but apparently, the taxis are extremely expensive and many locals simply choose to walk instead.

    Is There Uber In Montenegro?

No. Uber does not operate in Montenegro.

There are a few Uber alternatives and taxi apps that operate in the capital city of Podgorica, but when I stayed in Kotor and Ulcinj I could not find any decent alternatives to Uber. Both these places are very walkable though so it wasn’t really an issue.

    Alternatives to Uber in Montenegro

Is There Uber In San Marino?

No. Uber does not operate in San Marino. It is also not available in the nearby Italian city of Rimini.

To get from Rimini to San Marino, I recommend taking the bus, there is a daily service that is available year-round.

Alternatives to Uber in San Marino

San Marino is so tiny that there really isn’t much point in taking a taxi anywhere unless you have mobility issues.

I recommend that you just walk, if you are able, as taxis in San Marino are expensive for short distances.
