Wondering if you can use Uber in Stockholm, Sweden? I’ve got you covered!
As a solo female traveller, I know that it can be daunting to find your way around an unfamiliar city. Uber is an international brand that is used across the world and many of us feel more comfortable using this familiar brand rather than hailing a taxi on the street.
Uber operates in Stockholm and I used it several times while I was exploring the Swedish capital. However, it isn’t always the best option for getting around Stockholm.
In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know about using Uber in Stockholm, the best way to get from Arlanda airport to the city center, the best ways to get around Stockholm, and the best alternative taxi apps to Uber.
Let’s get started!
🚗 You’ll need data to use Uber or any other taxi app. Free WIFI isn’t always available in Europe so I suggest using an international eSim to avoid roaming charges. This eSim can be used in 190 countries around the world!

Is There Uber In Stockholm?

If you are wondering “Does Uber work in Stockholm?” The answer is yes! You can use Uber in Stockholm.
Uber is very popular in Stockholm. When I used the Uber app in Stockholm there were always lots of drivers available and I never had to wait longer than a couple of minutes to get a ride.
Although Uber is super convenient and many of us are used to using it as our default transport method, it isn’t always the best option for getting around in Stockholm.
I found that Stockholm is a very walkable city and the metro system is fantastic and much cheaper than Uber. I mainly used Uber when the snow was very heavy and I wanted to get somewhere quickly and without getting too cold. For example, when I had a dinner reservation across town and a huge blizzard started up, Uber was my savior!
I also think that Uber is better for short journeys only and if you’re planning on taking a day trip from Stockholm then public transport or a guided tour are better options.
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: During the winter, it gets dark early in Stockholm (around 3pm) so if you don’t feel comfortable walking alone or using public transport after dark then I would suggest using Uber.
Pros And Cons Of Using Uber In Stockholm
Pros of using Uber in Stockholm
- Convenient – There are a lot of Uber drivers in Stockholm so you will be able to get a ride almost instantly
- Avoid language barriers – Input your destination on the App without having to verbally communicate the address to the driver (Swedish words can be hard to pronounce)
- Avoid the cold – If you don’t want to have to wait for public transport in the snow then Uber is a great alternative!
- Feel safer – Uber has several safety features such as RideCheck, where you will be automatically contacted by a member of Uber’s support team if the driver goes off course or your ride is interrupted
Cons of using Uber in Stockholm
- Price – It is often the most expensive option
- Traffic – You could potentially get stuck in traffic. It might be quicker to use the Metro system during busy traffic times.
- Need wifi or data – You will need to be connected to the internet to use the Uber app. I recommend using an eSim to avoid data roaming charges.
How To Get From Stockholm Airport To City Centre?

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the city center. There are a few options for getting to and from the airport:
Taxi or Uber – Taxis and Ubers are available at the airport and will take you directly to your destination. However, getting an Uber from Arlanda to Stockholm is usually the most expensive option.
Flygbussarna Airport Coaches – These coaches offer a comfortable and affordable way to get from the airport to the city center. They depart every 10-15 minutes and take approximately 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
Arlanda Express Train – This is the fastest option, taking only 18 minutes between the airport and the city center. However, it is more expensive than the Flygbussarna coaches.
Private Transfer – This may be the most convenient option if you have a lot of luggage.

How To Get Around Stockholm
I found that Stockholm was a very easy city to navigate and I had no problem getting around by myself without a car. Here are a few of the best ways to get around Stockholm:
On Foot

Stockholm is a very walkable city and I highly recommend exploring the city on foot. Many of the main attractions are located close to each other, making it easy to navigate on foot.
You can also find several free walking tours available in Stockholm that will take you through different neighborhoods and provide interesting historical facts along the way.
Stockholm Metro

Also known as the Tunnelbana, the Stockholm metro system is one of the most efficient and affordable ways to get around the city. It has three main lines (Blue, Red, and Green) that cover most of the city’s popular areas. You can purchase tickets online or at any station and you can use these tickets on ferries and trams as well as the metro.
Metro Ticket Prices
- Single Journey: SEK 39 (~£2.90 GBP/ $3.60 USD)
- 24 hours: SEK 165 (~£12.30 GBP/ $15.20 USD)
- 72 hours: SEK 330 (~£24.70 GBP/ $30.30 USD)
- 7 days: SEK 430 (~£32.17 GBP/ $39.50 USD)
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: The Stockholm Metro is known as the world’s longest art gallery. Each station is decorated with incredible murals. For a fun activity in Stockholm, I recommend purchasing a 24 travel ticket and stopping at as many metro stations as you can! My favourite stations are Solna Centrum, Kungsträdgården, Morby Centrum, and Thorildsplan.
Stockholm Ferries
Stockholm is made up of many islands, meaning that ferries can often be a convenient and easy way to get around.
The most popular ferry route is the Djurgårdsfärjan which connects Gamla Stan (Old Town) with Djurgården island where you can find popular attractions such as the Vasa Museum and ABBA Museum.
You can also use your metro tickets to ride the ferries.
Stockholm Hop on Hop Off Bus
If you prefer a guided tour, then the hop-on-hop-off bus may be a good option for you. These buses stop at all of Stockholm’s major sights and you can get on and off as many times as you like throughout the day.
You can book tickets in advance or purchase them directly from the bus.
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: If you are going to be using the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus and planning to visit a lot of museums, then you should consider investing in a Stockholm Pass. The pass includes the bus ticket as well as boat tours, kayaking, entry to museums, and many other tours and activities.
Stockholm Taxis And Ride Sharing Apps

Taxis are readily available in Stockholm but they can be quite expensive, especially compared to other modes of transport.
If you prefer a more affordable option, then ridesharing apps like Uber and Bolt are also available in the city. Just keep in mind that surge pricing may occur during peak times.
Uber Alternatives In Stockholm – Best Stockholm Taxi Apps
Uber isn’t the only taxi app in Stockholm.
Bolt (formerly known as Taxify) is an Estonian ridesharing company that operates in Stockholm and other cities throughout Europe. It offers competitive pricing and has similar features to Uber, such as tracking your ride on the app.
I didn’t use Bolt in Stockholm but I’ve used it in many other cities in Europe and I can recommend that it is on par with Uber.
If you are wondering if you can use Lyft in Stockholm, then you are out of luck! The popular ride-sharing app doesn’t operate in Sweden.
Best Stockholm Taxi Services

Taxi Stockholm
Taxi Stockholm is the largest taxi company in Stockholm. You can book a ride through their app or by calling their dispatch center.
They also offer a fixed price for journeys to and from airports which can be convenient if you don’t want to worry about fluctuating prices due to traffic.
Sverige Taxi
Sverige Taxi is another popular taxi company in Stockholm that offers both an app and a phone booking option. They have a large fleet of cars and also offer airport transfer services at fixed prices.

Is Uber Cheaper Than A Taxi In Stockholm?

In my experience, Uber is usually cheaper than a regular taxi in most places but for me, this didn’t apply in Stockholm. I found that in Stockholm there was very little price difference between Uber and regular taxi fares. I think this is due to the taxi laws for Uber in Sweden.
If you are traveling during peak hours or surge pricing is in effect, then a taxi may end up being the more affordable option.
It’s always best to compare prices between different modes of transport before making a decision.
Tips For Getting An Uber In Stockholm

Here are a few tips that I think are worth considering when getting an Uber in Stockholm:
- Make sure the credit card attached to your account has zero foreign transaction fees, since everything will be processed in Euros.
- Make sure that your phone has data. To avoid expensive roaming charges I always recommend that you purchase an international eSim card and data package.
- There are areas that the drivers cannot pick up, eg. the old town area. But the app will tell you where to go.
- Most people in Stockholm speak English so there shouldn’t be any language barriers when communicating with your driver.
- Don’t forget to leave a review of your driver after your ride! It helps other travelers and the drivers themselves.
Where Else Does Uber Operate in Sweden?

Uber also operates in the cities of Gothenburg and Malmö in Sweden.
However, it is important to note that due to regulations, there may be limited availability or different pricing options compared to other countries.
As always, it’s best to check with the Uber app for the most up-to-date information on their services in specific locations.
Is There Uber Eats In Stockholm?

Yes, there is Uber Eats in Stockholm! It offers delivery from a variety of restaurants and cafes in the city and is a convenient option if you are looking to try some local cuisine from the comfort of your accommodation.
The prices and delivery fees may be slightly higher than other food delivery services, but it can be worth it for the convenience factor.
Some of the girls in my hostel dorm room were able to order food to be delivered to the hostel from Uber Eats because they didn’t want to go outside in the dark and snow.
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: If you’re interested in trying out Uber Eats in Stockholm, make sure to keep an eye out for promotions and discounts that may be available on the app.
Final Thoughts: Is There Uber In Stockholm?
Whether you prefer public transport, taxis, or ridesharing apps, there are plenty of options for getting around Stockholm.
While Uber may not always be the most affordable option in this city, it is still a convenient and reliable choice. Additionally, don’t forget to explore other taxi apps and services that are available in Stockholm.
With a little research and planning, you can easily navigate the city and make the most of your trip!
