It’s not always your best option. Amsterdam is a very walkable city with an excellent metro system so oftentimes it is cheaper to hop on the metro or simply walk if your destination isn’t too far.
There are also some areas of the city (such as the red light district) where Ubers can’t get to due to the narrow cobbled streets.

There are 4 main options to get from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam city centre: Uber/taxi, train, bus, and Airport transfer.

While taking a taxi may seem like the most convenient option, it’s actually not the most cost-effective. A taxi ride can cost you anywhere between €35-€50 (£30-£43 GBP/$38-$54 USD) depending on traffic and time of day.
There is an official taxi stand at the airport, but it was very crowded when I visited. There were so many people just queuing outside and honestly, it looked super chaotic. I decided to take the train from the airport to the city centre instead.
However, on my way back to the airport I decided to get an Uber as my flight was in the middle of the night and I didn’t want to be in the train station by myself at that time.
It was super easy to get an Uber from my hotel to the airport. I didn’t have to wait long for a driver to accept my ride. It cost me around €32 (~£27.50 GBP/$35 USD).
Schiphol Airport Train
The best and most convenient way to get from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to the city centre is by taking a train.
The journey takes about 20 minutes and trains depart every 10-15 minutes during the day and hourly between 2am and 5am. You can check the up-to-date train schedules here.
You can easily purchase tickets at the kiosks in the airport or purchase a 1, 2 or 3-day travel ticket that gives you unlimited travel on the airport train, the metro system and Amsterdam’s buses. I used this pass and really got my money’s worth during my 4 days in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Airport Bus
I didn’t take the bus myself but it’s a great option if you are on a budget. The Amsterdam Airport Express Bus 397 departs from the airport every 10 minutes during peak hours and takes about 30 minutes to reach the city centre.
The bus stops at various main city locations including Stadionplein, Emmastraat, Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein.
Airport Transfer to Amsterdam
I was travelling solo and only had hand luggage with me, which is why getting the train was easy for me. If I was travelling with a group and had a lot of luggage then I definitely would have pre-booked a private airport transfer.
