If you’ve been asking yourself, “Is Corfu worth a visit?” you’re in the right place.

I visited Corfu on a girls’ trip with a few of my friends, and it completely exceeded my expectations. We based ourselves in Sidari and took day trips across the island, which I’d 100% recommend if you want to see more than just one area. Even now, we still talk about that trip and agree it was one of the best holidays we’ve taken together.

But what actually makes Corfu so special, and is it worth choosing over other Greek islands?

Why Is Corfu Worth A Visit?

Corfu stands out straight away because it feels different to a lot of the other Greek islands. It’s much greener, with rolling hills, olive groves, and dramatic coastlines, which gives it a completely different vibe from places like Santorini or Mykonos.

It’s also one of the most culturally rich islands in Greece. Thanks to centuries of Venetian, French, and British rule, you’ll notice a real mix of influences in everything from the architecture to the food, especially when you explore Corfu Old Town.

From my experience, it’s the combination of variety and accessibility that really makes Corfu such a great destination. You can spend one day beach hopping, the next exploring historic sites, and another taking a boat trip or heading out on a hike.

There’s also a lot going on throughout the year, from local festivals to cultural events, which adds another layer to the experience if your trip lines up with them.

And while it’s definitely popular in the summer, I still found plenty of quieter spots, especially when we ventured beyond the main tourist areas.

Before I get into my 16 reasons why Corfu is worth visiting, here’s a quick, honest breakdown of what I personally loved, and a couple of things to be aware of.

What I Liked About Corfu

What I Didn’t Like About Corfu

• Cruise ships in Corfu Town – it can get very crowded when they arrive
• Some areas (like Sidari) feel quite touristy and less “authentic”

• You do need to travel around a bit to see the best parts of the island

One must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts is Mount Pantokrator, the highest point on the island. Its summit offers breathtaking views of Corfu, its surrounding islands and neighbouring Albania. The mountain is also a great spot for hiking and mountain biking.

I enjoyed driving through some of the mountainous areas, which provided stunning views and a chance to discover hidden villages and the local way of life.

I couldn’t get enough of the traditional Greek dishes like Gyros, stuffed vine leaves, and spanakopita (spinach pie) served at local tavernas. In addition to savoury dishes, Corfu is also known for its sweet treats such as mandolato (nougat), kumquat liqueur and local honey.

With an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year, Corfu has ideal weather for a holiday.

I visited in late May and was greeted with warm temperatures perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The evenings were cool and pleasant, making it comfortable to explore the town or dine al fresco.

4. The Corfu Beaches

Corfu is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.

Some of the top beaches I visited in Corfu included Paleokastritsa Beach, Paralia Sidari, and Canal d’Amour, each with its own completely different vibe.

But my favourite by far was Paleokastritsa. We actually went there for my birthday, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the whole trip.

We spent the day paddleboarding along the coastline, swimming in unbelievably clear water, eating pizza right on the beach, and hanging out at a cute little beach bar. It was one of those days that just felt effortlessly perfect.

The setting itself is stunning, with dramatic rock formations, hidden coves, and some of the clearest water I’ve seen in Greece. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend an entire day without getting bored, which is exactly what we did!

If you only have time to visit one beach in Corfu, I’d genuinely recommend making it this one.

Corfu has a long and diverse history, having been influenced by various civilisations such as the Venetians, British, and French. Interestingly, though, corfu was never under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, unlike many of its close neighbours.

You can explore this rich history through the many museums, castles and ancient ruins scattered throughout the island.

One of the must-visit historical sites is the Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow streets are lined with Venetian-style buildings, bustling markets, and charming cafes.

Another must-see historical site is the Old Fortress, situated on a small peninsula near Corfu’s main port.

I actually visited with one of my friends on a day trip while our other friend (who was very much in relaxation mode) stayed back at the hotel by the pool, which honestly worked out perfectly for all of us.

When we arrived, it was surprisingly quiet, especially compared to other parts of Corfu Town, and we ended up having large parts of the fortress almost to ourselves. We spent about an hour just wandering around, exploring the different sections, and taking in the views.

From the top, you get an incredible panoramic view over Corfu Town and the harbour, with cruise ships coming in and out; it’s one of those spots that really gives you a sense of the island’s history and layout.

If you’re visiting Corfu Town, I’d definitely recommend setting aside some time to explore the fortress properly rather than just seeing it from the outside.

The Neoclassical Achilleion Palace, a well-preserved imperial residence inspired by Greek mythology, is also worth a visit.

I love a good sunset and am always on the hunt for the best sunset spots. As someone who has travelled all over the world, I can confidently say that the sunsets in Greece are something else!

Corfu is blessed with some of the most picturesque spots for watching the sunset. One such spot is Kanoni, a small peninsula on the island’s east coast, where you can watch the sun go down over the famous Mouse Island.

For a more secluded experience, head to Loggas Beach, just a short boat ride from Sidari. Its rugged cliffs provide breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside, and is arguably the best sunset spot in Corfu.  

Here you can grab a spot at the famous 7th Heaven Beach Bar, perched on the cliff! Kick back with your favourite cocktail and enjoy the soothing tunes while you watch the sky light up with stunning reds and pinks over the sea!

For those who love a good beach party, Kavos in the south of Corfu is your go-to destination!

This lively resort town is famous for its all-night parties and attracts young crowds from all over Europe. With clubs like Future Club and The Rolling Stone Bar, you’re sure to have an unforgettable night out in Kavos.

If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, head to Corfu Town where you’ll find plenty of cozy bars and tavernas. The Old Town is especially charming with its narrow alleys and historic buildings.

Stop by Taverna Diporto for some delicious traditional Greek food and a cosy atmosphere, or check out the bustling bar scene at Sway Kitchen & Bar.

I personally loved the beach clubs in Sidari for a laid-back evening with cocktails and beautiful ocean views.

One of the best things about visiting Corfu is that it offers great value for money. Compared to other popular European destinations, you’ll find that Corfu is much more affordable.

Food and drink prices are also very reasonable, especially if you opt for street food or local restaurants and tavernas instead of touristy spots.

Another way to save on expenses in Corfu is by taking advantage of public transportation. Buses run frequently between major towns and attractions, making it easy for you to explore the island without breaking the bank.

I spent an afternoon paddleboarding in Paleokastritsa and had an incredible time. The water was so clear that I could see all the way to the sea floor from my board.

You can also rent a bike and explore the island at your own pace. There are several bike rental shops available in popular tourist areas, and many offer guided tours as well.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and luxurious outdoor experience, head to one of Corfu’s beach clubs. These clubs offer sunbeds and umbrellas, and often have pool facilities or beach activities and watersports on offer as well.

My favourite beach club in Corfu is Akron Beach Bar on Agia Triada beach in Paleokastritsa. Akron takes your beach day to the next level with luxurious sunbeds, a pool, yummy cocktails and an upscale atmosphere.

I also really enjoyed Mojitos Beach Bar in Sidari, which has a fun and lively atmosphere and is great value for money too!

One of the things that really stood out to me in Corfu was how friendly and welcoming people were. Whether it was restaurant staff, shop owners, or locals we spoke to in passing, everyone felt genuinely warm and helpful.

We had multiple moments where people went out of their way to give recommendations or help us figure out buses and directions, which always makes such a difference when you’re travelling somewhere new. It gave the whole trip a much more relaxed, easy feel.

14. It’s An Underrated Destination

Even though Corfu is popular (especially in summer), I was surprised by how underrated it still feels compared to islands like Santorini or Mykonos.

You get the same beautiful beaches, incredible food, and rich history, but with more variety, more greenery, and (in my opinion) better value for money.

Once you get away from the main tourist hotspots, it’s easy to find quieter, more authentic-feeling areas too.

15. Corfu Is Well-Connected

One of the most practical reasons Corfu is worth visiting is how easy it is to get there and travel onwards.

There are direct flights from lots of UK and European cities, which makes it a really convenient option whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a longer summer trip. But what makes Corfu even better, in my opinion, is how well-connected it is to other destinations.

From Corfu, you can easily take a ferry over to Albania (one of the easiest ways to visit places like Sarandë or Ksamil) or travel onwards to mainland Greece and other Greek islands. Once you’re on the island, you’ve also got a mix of buses, taxis, and car rental options, depending on how much exploring you want to do.

From my experience, basing yourself in one area and taking day trips (like we did) works really well, and gives you the flexibility to see more of the island without constantly moving accommodation.

If you like to explore beyond where you’re staying, Corfu is a great base for day trips.

You can easily visit different parts of the island, whether that’s beach-hopping along the coast, heading into the mountains, or exploring smaller villages that feel completely different from the main tourist areas.

There are also boat trips you can take, including trips along the coastline or even over to nearby islands and Albania, which is something I wish I’d planned more time for.

For me, this was one of the best parts of visiting Corfu; it never felt repetitive, because there was always somewhere new to discover.

To get there from Corfu, you can take a ferry to Igoumenitsa and then drive, catch a bus or take a train to Kalambaka, the nearest town to Meteora. The journey takes around 4 hours, so be sure to get an early start!

Once there, you can join a tour or hire a guide to explore these magnificent structures. Book your tour in advance to secure your spot and make the most of your visit.

Corfu is generally a safe place to visit for tourists. However, as with any travel destination, it’s important to take necessary precautions to ensure your safety. I felt completely safe in Corfu, even after dark and walking around the main town.

It’s important to note that many Greek islands have faced a rising number of wildfires in recent years. Many people were evacuated from Corfu in July 2023 due to fires rapidly spreading through the Northern part of the island. 

My advice is to stay informed and be prepared in case of emergencies during your visit. Be sure to also follow instructions from local authorities if any situations arise.

• Avoid leaving your belongings unattended in public places.
• Take extra care when swimming on beaches without lifeguards, as strong currents can be dangerous.

Best Time To Visit Corfu

The peak tourist season in Corfu is from June to September when the weather is warm and sunny. However, visiting during this time means dealing with larger crowds and higher prices.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of April to May or October to November. During these months, the weather is still pleasant, and there are fewer tourists. Plus, accommodation and activities tend to be more affordable.

I visited in May and had a very pleasant experience. The weather was warm enough to spend every day by the pool or on the beach.

I would avoid visiting Corfu in winter as much of the tourist infrastructure shuts down. You may struggle to find accommodation, tours, transport and open restaurants.

Is Corfu nice?

Yes! Corfu is genuinely one of the nicest Greek islands I’ve visited.

What makes it stand out is the combination of beautiful beaches, lush green landscapes, and a really rich mix of history and culture. It feels quite different to some of the drier, rocky Greek islands, which gives it a unique charm.

When I visited, I loved how much variety there was. One day we were swimming in crystal-clear water at beaches like Paleokastritsa, and the next, we were exploring Corfu Old Town or heading out on day trips to see more of the island.

It’s also the kind of place that works for different travel styles—whether you want a relaxed beach holiday, something more adventurous, or a mix of both.

If you’re wondering “Is Corfu worth visiting?” the answer is yes, and how nice it is to visit is a big part of why.

Final Thoughts: Is Corfu Worth Visiting?

So, is Corfu worth visiting? For me, it’s a very easy yes.

After travelling around both mainland Greece and several of the islands, Corfu really stood out, and not just because of how beautiful it is.

It’s the combination of variety, accessibility, and those standout moments (like beach days in Paleokastritsa or wandering through Corfu Old Town) that make it such a memorable place to visit.

It’s also one of those destinations that works for so many different types of trips. Whether you want a relaxed beach holiday, a more active itinerary with day trips and exploring, or something in between, Corfu makes it easy to do both without feeling rushed.

Of course, like anywhere, it’s not perfect; some areas can feel a bit touristy in peak season, and it’s worth planning ahead if you want to see the best of the island. But overall, the experience far outweighs any downsides.
