London is one of the most visited cities in the world, and for good reason. With its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant energy, there’s always something to see and do in this bustling metropolis.

But let’s be honest, London has its fair share of downsides too… the weather sucks for most of the year,  the streets can be crowded and chaotic, Londoners have a reputation for being unfriendly and it’s definitely not a “budget-friendly” city.

As a born and raised Brit, I spend a lot of time in our capital city. Whether I’m visiting friends, attending networking events or just exploring for fun, I find myself in the city at least once a month.

So, in my opinion, is London worth visiting in 2024? Absolutely! whether you are planning a trip to the UK or a jaunt around Europe, you simply can’t miss London.

Fun fact: there are 29 places around the world called London!  But for the sake of this guide, we will be discussing the one and only London – the capital of England and the United Kingdom.

Located in the southeast corner of England, London is a bustling city full of history, culture, and diverse neighbourhoods.

I love London. It’s a fun city and you’re guaranteed a good time no matter what you’re into.

There are world-class sights and landmarks to explore, but if like me you love getting off the beaten path and finding hidden gems then London has plenty of those too!

Even if you’ve visited before, there’s always something new to see and do in London. The city is constantly reinventing itself and staying at the forefront of trends and innovation. And with its excellent public transportation system, getting around the city is easy and convenient.

🇬🇧 Richmond Park: The largest Royal Park in London, Richmond Park is home to over 600 deer. You can take a leisurely walk or even rent a bike to explore the vast landscapes.

🇬🇧 Regents Park:  This park is home to the famous London Zoo and also boasts beautiful rose gardens and a boating lake. It’s a popular spot for sunbathing in the summer months.

🇬🇧 Kew Gardens: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kew Gardens is a botanical garden with over 50,000 different species of plants. It’s a great place to learn about nature and explore different climates in one place.

🇬🇧 Oxford: Home to one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, Oxford is a bustling city full of history and culture. Visit iconic landmarks like the Bodleian Library and Christ Church College, or simply wander the streets and soak up the atmosphere.

🇬🇧 Brighton: Just an hour train ride from London, Brighton is a popular coastal town that offers a fun day out. Stroll along the famous pier, visit the Royal Pavilion, or relax on the beach with some fish and chips.

🇬🇧 Stonehenge:  This mysterious prehistoric monument is a must-see for history buffs. Take a day trip to marvel at the massive stones and learn about the theories behind their purpose.

Non-Touristy Things To Do In London

When talking about things to do in London I could mention all the usual tourist spots (Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Tower Of London, Big Ben, etc.) but instead, I want to highlight some less touristy things to do in London.  

If you’re looking to get off the beaten path in London there’s no shortage of options. You can explore hidden gardens and parks, browse unique markets, or visit offbeat museums and galleries.

Honestly, there are so many amazing hidden gems and non-touristy things to do in London that I could write a whole blog post about it (maybe I will!) –  but as a frequent visitor to London here are my favourite things to do in London:

Explore Camden Town & Market

Camden is where I feel most at home in the city. It’s a vibrant, eclectic neighbourhood full of street art, quirky shops and food stalls – all set around the iconic Camden Market.

The area has a very alternative vibe and is known for its music scene, with live performances in various venues throughout the week. You can also take a canal boat ride from Camden to Little Venice for a unique and scenic experience.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you are a fan of Amy Winehouse, there are several places associated with her in Camden. You can visit her statue at Camden Market, visit The Dublin Castle where she played some of her earliest gigs or have a drink at her favourite pub, The Hawley Arms. You can also visit her house at 30 Camden Square, London, NW1 9XA

Meet The Wild Parakeets In Kensington Gardens

This is one of my favourite hidden gems in London and it’s completely free!

Kensington Gardens is a beautiful park that’s usually less crowded than other parks in the city. It’s also home to a large flock of wild parakeets.

You can usually spot them near the Peter Pan statue, where visitors often leave them seeds and nuts to eat.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you want to get a closer look at these colourful birds, bring some bird feed with you and they will likely come right up to you. Just be careful not to touch or feed them any human food.

Picnic On Hamstead Heath

If you want to escape the bustling city and enjoy some nature, Hamstead Heath is the perfect spot. It’s a large, hilly park with plenty of green space for picnics and stunning views of London.

I love coming up here on a summer evening with some friends and a picnic blanket to watch the sunset over the city. There are also several swimming ponds if you’re feeling brave enough to take a dip!

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you are planning on taking a dip make sure you are familiar with cold water swimming guidelines and don’t stay in the water for too long. A good rule of thumb is 1 minute for every degree centigrade of water temperature.

Visit Highgate Cemetary

If you’re a fan of Gothic architecture and history, Highgate Cemetary is a must-visit spot in London. It’s the final resting place for several famous figures, including Karl Marx and George Eliot.

You can take a self-guided tour or join one of their guided tours which run on weekends. The cemetery is divided into two parts – east and west – and each has its own unique atmosphere. The east side is known for its grandiose Victorian tombs, while the west side is more overgrown and eerie.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as the cemetery grounds can be uneven and hilly, especially on the West side.

Party In Soho

Soho is known for its lively nightlife, with a variety of bars, pubs, and clubs to choose from. It’s also home to London’s LGBTQ+ scene, making it a diverse and inclusive area.

You can find anything from retro-themed bars to upscale cocktail lounges in the vibrant streets of Soho.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you’re looking for a unique experience, check out the jazz clubs in Soho, where you can catch some live music while sipping on a drink. Ronnie Scotts jazz club is iconic and has hosted many famous musicians like Amy Winehouse, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix and Prince!

Hot Tub Boat On The River Thames

Experience London from a whole new perspective by renting a hot tub boat on the River Thames. Yes, you read that right – you can rent a floating hot tub!

You and your friends can relax in the warm waters while taking in the stunning views of the city’s iconic landmarks.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Book your hot tub boat in advance as they can get booked up quickly, especially during summer. And don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel!

Explore The Pretty Streets Of Kentish Town 

If you’re looking for a quieter and more charming side of London, head over to Kentish Town.

This cosy neighbourhood is filled with cute and colourful houses, independent shops, and quaint cafes. Take a stroll down Kentish Town Road or explore the hidden gems on Highgate Road.

Walk The Canals Of Little Venice

Did you know there is a little Venice in London?

One of my favourite things to do in London is to take the one-hour walk along the Little Venice towpath from Paddington to Camden Lock Market. It’s a gorgeous and peaceful walk along the canals.

You get to see animals as you pass behind the zoo and can stop for a drink in one of the many pubs in the area. Be sure to check out all the colourful houseboats along the way.

Explore Brick Lane And Shoreditch

For a taste of the vibrant and eclectic side of London, head over to Brick Lane and Shoreditch. This area is known for its street art, thrift shops, and delicious food options from all around the world.

I love the street art in this area, and it’s always changing, so you never know what you’ll find. Be sure to check out the Banksy mural on Rivington Street.

Discover Leake Street Tunnel (Also Known As The Vaults)

Another great spot for street art lovers is the Leake Street Tunnel, also known as The Vaults.

Located just behind Waterloo Station, this tunnel is constantly changing with new graffiti and street art pieces. It’s a hidden gem in London that many tourists miss out on, so be sure to check it out!

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip:  Visit during the day for a quieter and more peaceful experience, or at night for a livelier atmosphere.

Check Out The View From The Sky Garden

For a breathtaking view of London, head over to the Sky Garden. Located in the Walkie Talkie building, London’s highest public garden offers 360-degree views of the city skyline.

Best of all, it’s completely free! However, be sure to book your visit in advance as tickets tend to sell out quickly and you are required to book a time-slot.

Go Rooftop Bar Hopping 

Another way to see the city from above is by going rooftop bar hopping.

London has a variety of rooftop bars, each offering unique views and atmospheres. From fancy cocktails to casual vibes,  there’s a rooftop bar for every mood.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Most of these bars have a smart casual dress code, so avoid rocking up in your hoodie and trainers. A lot of bars in London are cashless and prefer contactless payments, so make sure you have Apple Pay enabled or a contactless debit or credit card. 

Chow Down In Chinatown

You’ll find Chinatown between Soho and Leicester Square. Surrounded by vibrant red lanterns and decorated buildings, this area is home to some of the best Chinese and East Asian cuisine in London. 

From street food stalls to high-end restaurants, there’s something for every budget and taste. Be sure to try some of the famous bubble tea while you’re there!

Is London Expensive To Visit?

London has a reputation for being a very expensive city and whilst that is certainly true, it doesn’t have to always break the bank.  There are plenty of free and budget-friendly activities to do while visiting London.

Here Are Some Ideas For Free Things To Do In London:

🇬🇧 Free Museums: Visit one of the many free museums and galleries such as the British Museum, National Gallery, or Tate Modern.

🇬🇧 Free Parks: Take a stroll through one of London’s many beautiful parks such as Hyde Park, Regent’s Park or Greenwich Park.

🇬🇧 Picnic: Enjoy a picnic in one of these parks or grab some food from a local market and have it by the river Thames.

🇬🇧 Free Walking Tours: Take advantage of the many free walking tours available, such as these.

🇬🇧 Visit Markets: Explore some of London’s markets for unique souvenirs and delicious street food, such as Camden Market or Borough Market.

For me, the biggest expense is always food and drink, so a great way to save money is by cooking some meals at your accommodation.  There are plenty of budget supermarkets available such as Aldi or Lidl. 

However, if you do want to try some traditional British food, I recommend heading to a local pub for some fish and chips or a pie. Many pubs offer affordable lunch specials as well.

Another tip for saving money in London is to use public transport wisely. The Oyster card is the most cost-effective way to get around the city, offering discounted fares on buses, trains, and the underground.

Overall, while London can be expensive, there are definitely ways to make your visit more budget-friendly. With a little bit of planning and some insider tips, you can have an amazing time in this vibrant city without breaking the bank.

The Best Time To Visit London

London is a city that can be enjoyed year-round, but there are certain times of the year that may appeal more to travellers depending on their preferences.

The summer months (June-August) tend to be the most popular time to visit due to warmer weather and longer daylight hours. 

This is definitely my favourite time of year in the city. Summer in London is magical. However, you should be aware that this also means larger crowds and higher prices for accommodations.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly and less crowded experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). 

The weather may be a little more damp and drizzly during these times, but you’ll still get to enjoy many indoor activities while avoiding peak season prices.

Winter in London (December-February) can also be a magical time to visit with the city lit up for the holiday season and fewer tourists around. Plus, you may be able to snag some great deals on accommodations during this time.

Overall, the best time to visit London really depends on your personal preferences and budget. No matter when you choose to go, there will always be something exciting happening.

Is London Worth Visiting In December?

I love visiting London in December to see the Christmas lights and markets. I make sure to make time to visit every December, even if it’s just for a short afternoon trip.

The city is transformed into a winter wonderland with festive decorations and events happening all around. 

You can visit iconic landmarks like Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden to see the famous Christmas trees or check out the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park for some holiday-themed fun.

One of my favourite things to do during this time is to go ice skating at the various outdoor rinks scattered throughout the city. It’s a truly magical experience with the stunning architecture and twinkling lights as your backdrop.

Plus, you can’t forget about the food! London has some amazing Christmas markets where you can indulge in traditional holiday treats like mulled wine, mince pies, and roasted chestnuts.

So yes, I would definitely say that London is worth visiting in December. It may be a bit colder and busier than other times of the year, but the festive atmosphere and unique experiences make it all worth it. 

Just make sure to pack some warm clothes, an umbrella and comfortable shoes for all the exploring you’ll be doing! 

How Many Days Do You Need In London?

How many days you need in London really depends on what you want to see. 

If you are coming from elsewhere within the UK then you can pack a lot into a day trip to London. However, if you are travelling from further away, I would recommend staying for at least 3-5 days to get a good feel of the city.

With so many iconic landmarks and attractions to see, it’s important not to rush your visit. Take your time exploring the different areas of London, such as the bustling streets of Soho or the charming neighbourhoods of Notting Hill.

Aside from the popular tourist spots, don’t forget to also venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that only locals know about.

Is London Safe For Tourists?

As a Brit, I can confidently say that the city is generally safe for tourists. Of course, it’s always important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings, just like in any other big city.

I’ve visited London hundreds of times and have never run into any problems, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Some tips for staying safe in London include avoiding carrying large amounts of cash, keeping your valuables close to you (especially on the tube!), and staying alert when walking around at night.

Overall, as long as you use common sense and take necessary precautions, there is no reason why you shouldn’t feel safe while visiting London.

Where To Stay In London

Kennsington is my favourite neighbourhood in London. I love staying at The Beaufort. It’s got a swanky vibe and is in a great location – just 3 minutes walk from Knightsbridge tube station.

Mondrian Shoreditch is another favourite of mine. I love the design of this hotel and the rooftop pool is such a treat in the summer!

If you’re looking for a budget option then I recommend Generator Hostel, it’s in a great location in central London, close to Covent Garden and has a choice of private rooms and dorms.

How To Get To London

If you are flying in from the United States or elsewhere in the world then London has multiple airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City Airport.

The most convenient way to get to the city centre from these airports is by taking the train or National Express coach to Victoria Station and then switching to the tube to get to your hotel.

If you’re travelling from within Europe, you can also take the Eurostar train which connects London with various cities in several European countries such as Paris and Amsterdam.

How To Get Around London

The London Underground is the most popular mode of transportation and covers most of the city.

It’s affordable, efficient, and easy to navigate with multiple options for tickets including pay-as-you-go or daily travelcards. It should cost you around £8.50 for a day pass.
