Shkoder ( also known as Shkodra or shkodër Albania) is a beautiful city in Albania that offers plenty of things to do and see.

During my three-day stay here, I had the opportunity to experience so many fun things that Shkoder has to offer. From exploring its historic ruins to visiting its picturesque natural attractions, there is no shortage of activities here for those looking for something unique and exciting.

In this article, I will explore some of the best things to do in Shkoder including sightseeing spots, outdoor adventures and cultural experiences that should not be missed!

So if you are planning your next trip to Albania or just curious about what this charming city has to offer – read on!

30 Best Things To Do In Shkoder

1. Rozafa castle 

Rozafa Castle was my favourite thing in Shkoder! Sitting high above the town, it offers incredible views and dates back to the 13th century.

The castle is one of the most popular Shkoder attractions and is a must-do when visiting the city.

The hike up to the castle is steep with no shade, so it’s best to avoid going up there during the mid-day sun.

My experience exploring this historic ruin was absolutely amazing – I felt like I had stepped back in time. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something unique and exciting!

There is no signage or tourist info available at the castle itself so it’s best to google its history before you visit so that you have some idea of what you’re looking at. There is a small museum which does have some info though.

The best thing about the castle is the view and the friendly goats that live up there!

2. Spend a day at the lake 

Lake Shkoder, Albania, is a beautiful lake located on the outskirts of Shkoder.

The lake (also known as Shkodra Lake) has an area of almost 320 square kilometres and is the largest lake in Albania. It is fed by the Drin River and three other tributaries and is a popular destination for anglers, campers, and birdwatchers.

I spent a day at the lake for my friend’s birthday and we had an amazing time!

There are a few small rocky beaches with beach bars which are perfect for relaxing in the sun or renting paddleboards to explore more of this stunning waterway.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch while taking in views of the mountains from across the water’s edge. It was a really relaxing day and there was no one else around so we basically had the beach to ourselves!

🤩 I loved renting paddleboards and paddling out in the lake, the waters were so calm and relaxing – a perfect way to chill out on a sunny afternoon 

3. Kayaking 

Kayaking in Albania is an amazing experience. From the calm waters of Lake Shkoder to the breathtaking scenery of Komani Lake and the winding curves of the Shala River, there are plenty of opportunities for kayakers to explore this beautiful country.

I kayaked around these three locations and had an amazing time! The waters were calm and relaxing, providing a perfect backdrop for a peaceful day on the water.

In addition to paddling through picturesque scenery, we encountered some unique wildlife along our journey including birds, fish and even wild boar!

It was truly an unforgettable trip that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for something off-the-beaten-path.

Whenever I visit a new place, one of the first things I do is take a walking tour.

Walking tours are an excellent way to get to know a city and explore its hidden gems.

In Shkoder, there are several amazing walking tours that offer visitors an insight into Shkoder sightseeing and the culture and history of this fascinating city.

From exploring its unique architecture to learning about traditional customs, these walking tours provide a fascinating insight into the city.

5. The Ebu Bekr Mosque

The Ebu Bekr Mosque is a stunning mosque in Shkoder, Albania.

Built in 1995 after the previous mosque was destroyed by the communist regime, this beautiful building features an ornate interior and a peaceful atmosphere.

Visitors are welcome to explore its grandeur but must remember that it is still an active place of worship so be sure to show respect and dress appropriately.

It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring Shkoder.

6. Mesi bridge

The Mesi Bridge is a stunning Ottoman bridge located in the village of Mes, about 5km (3 miles) from Shkoder.

Built by the Ottomans in the 18th century, this beautiful bridge spans across the river Kir and offers incredible views of its unique architecture.

Mesi Bridge is easy to get to from Shkoder – you can take a taxi or rent a bike for an enjoyable ride through some picturesque scenery!

7. Marubi National Museum of Photography

The Marubi National Museum of Photography is one of the most popular places to visit in Shkoder and is a great place to go when it’s raining in Shkoder.

Located in the centre of town, this museum showcases the work of three generations of photographers from the Marubi family and has various temporary exhibitions throughout the year related to Albanian culture.

It’s an ideal spot for those looking for something unique and interesting, even on a rainy day!

The museum also offers free guided tours which provide visitors with more information about its collection as well as insights into Albanian culture and history.

8. Shkoder’s Venetian Mask Museum

The Venetian Mask Factory in Shkoder is a unique art mask factory and a small museum that provides visitors with an insight into the history and culture of traditional masks used for masquerades and festivals in Shkodra.

The museum features an extensive collection of masks from various eras as well as other artefacts related to mask making.

There are also some beautiful masks available for sale, which make great souvenirs.

Visitors can explore the history behind these traditional masks while admiring their intricate designs and craftsmanship. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary!

9. Site of Witness and Memory Museum

The Site of Witness and Memory Museum in Shkoder, Albania is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of communist rule in this region.

The museum provides a living history lesson about the Albanian people’s struggles during the brutal dictatorship that lasted from 1945 until the 1990s.

The museum is housed in a former prison cell block and visiting it is a very moving experience.

I was amazed by how much I learned from my visit to this important site, which gave me insight into what life was like under oppressive and authoritarian regimes.

The museum also provided me with a greater understanding of why freedom is so important to all people, no matter their background or beliefs.

10. Monument to Mother Teresa

The Mother Teresa statue in Shkoder, Albania is a modest monument erected to honour the Albanian/Macedonian saint.

Located near the Ebu Bekr Mosque, it’s worth a quick visit if you’re already in the area – though it’s not particularly impressive compared to other statues of her around the world.

Still, it serves as an important reminder of her legacy and offers visitors a chance to pay their respects with flowers or prayer.

11. Day trip to Montenegro

One of my favourite things to do in Shkoder, Albania is take a day trip to Montenegro.

With minibuses (known as furgons) that travel from Shkoder to Ulcinj in Montenegro taking only 1.5 hours and costing around €5, it’s an easy and affordable way to explore the beautiful Balkan region.

From Ulcinj, you can catch onward buses to Kotor, Budva, and Podgorica or even rent a car for a scenic drive along the coast.

I have visited several places throughout the Balkans but my time spent in Ulcinj remains one of my most treasured memories – its stunning beaches, cute old town, and vibrant atmosphere make it a real hidden gem! I also adored Kotor, which is definitely one of the top places to visit in the Balkans.

🤩 I love this day tour of Montenegro as it includes stops at Budva and Kotor, two of the best places to visit in Montenegro – plus it also includes a mystery stop!

12. Day Trip To Theth – Hike To The Theth Blue Eye Spring

Theth Blue Eye Spring is a real adventure to get to and an incredible sight.

The spring is located in Albania’s accursed mountains range, a 2-hour drive from Shkoder in the Theth National Park.

You can take a 17 km hike (~3 hour roundtrip) from the village of Theth in order to reach this stunning natural spring with its bright blue waters. Alternatively, you can hike directly from Shkoder which should take around 5 hours.

 Despite its beauty, you have to be brave to take a dip as the water is freezing cold! I was only able to keep my feet in for just a few minutes before having to retreat back out again!

Still, if you’re looking for an exciting outdoor experience and don’t mind braving the chill then Theth Blue Eye Spring is definitely worth visiting.

The village of Theth is also worth exploring to experience a taste of life in the Albanian Alps.

13. Komani ferry

The Komani Ferry is a must-do when visiting Northern Albania.

The ferry sails across the gorgeous Lake Koman and takes 1.5 hours each way.

The ferry ride takes you through some stunning scenery of canyons and deep gorges. It is honestly one of the most beautiful places I have ever experienced.

You can board the ferry at Fierza where it then sails to Valbona. It’s worth combining this with an overnight stay in Valbona national park, as Fierze is a 3-hour drive from Shkoder.

It’s an experience that will stay with you forever, so make sure to take a camera with you on your journey!

14. Valbona valley national park 

Valbona Valley National Park is a stunning area in North Albania that is home to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the region.

If you’re looking for an amazing outdoor adventure, then Valbona Valley should be top of your list! I did the hike from Theth to Valbona and it was one of my favourite experiences ever.

The views of the Albanian Alps were breathtaking and I felt like I had stepped into another world as we hiked through the mountains and valleys.

It’s definitely worth taking a bus from Shkoder to Theth (€10) and then start your hike there – you won’t regret it!

🤩 To experience the best of Valbona and Theth then I recommend this tour – It includes transport, accommodation and ferry tickets so you can just relax and enjoy the stunning nature without having to worry about any of the logistics

15. Rent a bike 

Shkoder in Albania is a great city for cycling and exploring on two wheels.

The city is small enough that it’s easy to get around by bike, and there are plenty of places to rent bicycles from in the centre.

Taking a bike ride along the shores of Lake Shkoder can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon, allowing you to explore more of what this beautiful city has to offer while also taking in some stunning views at the same time!

It’s definitely worth considering if you’re looking for something fun and unique to do during your stay.

16. Day trip to Shala river

This is one of the best day trips from Shkoder!

A day trip to the Shala River in Albania is perfect for those looking to explore the region’s natural beauty.

The best way to experience this hidden gem is by combining it with a visit to the Komani Lake Ferry. This will allow you to take in both of these stunning locations while also taking time to appreciate the surrounding gorgeous scenery.

The Shala River is perfect for swimming and kayaking, making it a great choice for those looking to enjoy the outdoors while visiting Albania.

🤩 This adventure trip to Shala River and Komani Lake is a truly bucket-list-worthy experience! 

17. Attempt The Peaks Of The Balkans Trail 

The Peaks of the Balkans is an incredible 200-kilometre trekking route that links together three countries – Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo.

This stunning trail takes you through lush meadows, wooded valleys, jagged peaks and crystal-clear rivers as well as remote villages untouched by time.

It’s a great way to explore the region and can take around two weeks to complete – or you can just hike sections of it if you’re short on time.

The best part is that you can start this amazing adventure from Theth which is only about 1.5 hours away from Shkoder!

🥾 I recommend hiking the Peaks of the Balkans as part of a small group tour – that way you won’t get lost!

18. Shkoder historical museum

Located in the heart of Shkoder, Albania, the Shkoder Historical Museum is a must-visit for anyone looking to learn more about the city’s rich history.

Opened in 1947, this small yet charming museum houses paintings and artefacts that showcase its past.

It is best to get a guided tour as there isn’t much signage inside the museum – but it’s worth it! The knowledgeable guides can tell you all about Shkoder’s fascinating history and provide an insight into what life was like during different eras.

19. Find the hidden bunkers 

One of the most interesting things to do in Shkoder, Albania is exploring its abandoned bunkers.

Albania is known for being the land of bunkers. These relics of a bygone era are dotted around the city and surrounding area, offering a glimpse into the country’s turbulent past.

The lake at Shkoder also hides several bunkers which can be discovered with some careful exploration.

20. Bunker Tattoo Shop

Keq Marku Tattoo is one of the most crazy things to do in Albania. This unique tattoo parlour is located inside an abandoned bunker and offers a truly unforgettable experience.

The artist himself, Peter, has become somewhat of a celebrity in the area due to his impressive work and quirky demeanour.

Even though I didn’t get a tattoo here this time around, I’m definitely planning on returning for some ink next time I visit!

22. Take Part In Xhiro In Rruga Kole Idromeno

Xhiro, a traditional evening stroll which takes place in towns and cities across Albania every evening, is one of the best things to do in Shkoder.

People of all ages gather to walk, chat, and even stop for coffee or ice cream at the many cafes along the way.

The Pedonale (Rruga Kole Idromeno) in Shkoder is an excellent spot for xhiro as it’s located right in the city centre and offers a beautiful stone walkway with lots of cafes around to explore.

It’s a great opportunity to meet locals and soak up the atmosphere and get a glimpse of everyday life in Shkoder.

23. Experience Shkoder Nightlife 

Nightlife in Shkoder is an enjoyable and memorable experience that will make your trip even more special.

Although there is only one proper club in the city (Astoria club), there are plenty of bars to enjoy a few drinks with friends.

One thing to be aware of is that when my friends and I went out drinking we noticed that we were sometimes the only women in the bars, and although I never felt unsafe or had any problems, I probably would have felt a bit uneasy if I was alone.

So if you are a solo female traveller you might feel more comfortable sticking to restaurants or socialising at your hostel.

24. Make some animal friends 

There are lots of stray animals in Shkoder. It is sad to see them if you are an animal lover but they are very friendly and it seems like the local people regularly feed them. We often had a few dogs following us around.

The hostel I stayed in took in and adopted out some of the strays and had several dogs, cats and tortoises wandering around.

25. Experience cafe culture

Café culture is very much alive and thriving in Shkoder. I loved watching the locals while we sipped coffee or enjoyed a pastry at one of the many cafes around town.

The best part about having coffee in Shkoder was that there were so many options to choose from, and you could always find the perfect spot for your morning caffeine and pastry fix!

26. Shop at flea markets

If you’re looking for a unique shopping experience while visiting Shkoder, Albania, then you should definitely check out the local markets.

From handmade carpets to traditional clothing and jewellery, there is something for everyone at these vibrant outdoor markets. You can even find souvenirs that make perfect gifts for friends and family back home.

Not only will you be able to find some great items but it’s also an opportunity to chat with locals and get an insight into their culture.

So if you’re looking for a truly authentic experience in Shkoder, don’t miss out on exploring its bustling flea markets!

27. Eat Some Traditional Albanian Food

The traditional cuisine of Shkoder, Albania is something you definitely don’t want to miss out on.

From delicious grilled meats and vegetables to hearty stews and savoury pastries, there is something for everyone here. I had no problems finding vegan versions of some of the local dishes too.

For a truly unique experience, head to one of the city’s weekly farmers’ markets where you can try dishes like byrek (a type of pastry filled with spinach, cheese, or meat) and qebap (Albanian-style kebabs).

28. Skanderbeg’s tomb in Lezha 

The Skanderbeg Mausoleum in Lezha, Albania is a must-see for anyone visiting the region.

Located in the town of Lezha, it houses the former cathedral of St. Nicholas where Skanderbeg, the commander and national hero of Albania, was buried in 1468.

The mausoleum is an impressive sight to behold during both day and night as its lights illuminate the area creating a peaceful atmosphere. There are also some nice gardens and a castle to visit in Lezha.

29. Hotel Restorant Tradita Gegë & Toskë

Hotel Restorant Tradita Gegë & Toskë is a great place to experience the unique culture of Albania.

Not only is the hotel and restaurant stunning with their traditional northern Albanian decor, but they also serve up delicious food alongside lots of cultural activities and entertainment.

You can enjoy a meal here while experiencing live performances of traditional music or other events such as storytelling and dance that showcase the local customs. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in Albanian culture.

30. Visit one of the Northern beaches

For those looking to take a break from sightseeing and exploring the city of Shkoder, there are two beautiful beaches nearby.

Plazhi Ada is a small beach located near the village of Pulaj that offers stunning views and plenty of opportunities for swimming and sunbathing.

For those looking for a longer beach experience, Velipoja Beach is just a 40-minute drive from Shkoder and stretches out over five kilometres. This quiet sandy beach is perfect for relaxing in peace while taking in views of the Adriatic Sea.

However, it’s important to note that there can be quite a bit of trash here so visitors should be aware before visiting.

How To Get To Shkoder

Tirana airport is the only airport in Albania so if you are flying in this is where you will land.

You have several options for how to get from Tirana to Shkoder.

The easiest way to get to Shkoder is by bus. There are direct buses from Tirana, the capital of Albania, which take approximately 2 hours. You can also rent a car in Albania or try hitchhiking. Hitchhiking in Albania is a great adventure!

How To Get Around Shkoder

Shkoder is a great city to explore on foot, with many of the top sites within easy walking distance of each other. The pedestrian-friendly streets make it easy to take in all the sights and sounds of this vibrant city.

For those looking for an even more efficient way to get around, renting a bike is also an option. With bikes available at numerous rental locations throughout Shkoder, you can easily hop from one attraction to the next without getting too tired or losing your way. Plus, biking allows you to take in some beautiful views that are not accessible by car or bus!

If you want to take a taxi, remember that Uber does not operate in Albania but there are some good local taxi companies available in Shkoder, such as Speed Taxi. 

If you want to do some day trips or visit the nearby beaches then I recommend that you rent a car in Shkoder

Hotels In Shkoder

Hotel Legjenda

In my opinion, Hotel Legjenda is the best place to stay in Shkoder. I didn’t stay here but a friend of mine did so I spent some time here.

When I next go back to Shkoder this is definitely where I will stay. The pool is lovely and there is such a nice relaxed atmosphere here.

It’s a great place to stay for all budgets as it has a range of accommodation options from dorm rooms to deluxe chalets.

Hotel Tradita is a traditionally decorated boutique hotel and guest house in Shkoder. It offers great value for money and the food in their restaurant is really delicious!

Shkodra Backpackers Hostel

This is the hostel that I stayed in. I loved the garden area and the free bikes. It’s a great place for solo travellers as there is a very social atmosphere here which makes it easy to find friends. It’s also great for animal lovers as the hostel is home to several dogs, cats and tortoises!

Where To Eat In Shkoder

Shkoder has lots of great options for food. I really enjoyed trying lots of Albanian dishes in Shkodra and I had no trouble finding lots of yummy vegan options. Here are a few of the best restaurants in Shkoder:

Puri

This is one of the most popular restaurants in Shkoder and they have a great selection of traditional Albanian dishes.

My friends and I loved this restaurant and ate there several times. The portions here are massive so be prepared to share! There are lots of great veggie and vegan options available here too.

Tradita Geg & Tosk

This cute little restaurant has a really cosy atmosphere and the food is really tasty. The owners and their families are so friendly and accommodating.

Arti’Zanave

This restaurant has become very popular in Shkoder recently and it’s not hard to see why! They have some amazing dishes that are full of flavour and they also have vegan and vegetarian options available.

Tours are a great way to explore the area around Shkoder. They are often the most convenient way of getting around, especially when public transport in Albania isn’t always reliable.

How Many Days In Shkoder 

Shkoder is a wonderful city with plenty of sights to explore and activities to do.

With just two days in the city, you can easily cover all the must-see attractions and soak up the local culture.

However, if you want to take some day trips or relax at one of the beautiful beaches nearby, then it’s worth staying for longer than two days.

There are lots of fun things to see in Shkoder so make sure you plan your trip accordingly!

Tips For Visiting Shkoder

1. Book accommodation in advance – There are lots of great hotels and hostels in the city but they can get booked up quickly so make sure you book your stay ahead of time.

2. Rent a car or bike – Shkoder is relatively easy to navigate on foot but renting a car or bike will give you more freedom to explore further afield.

3. Sample traditional Albanian food – Balkan cuisine is full of flavour and there’s no better place than Shkoder to sample it! Make sure you try some delicious local dishes such as byrek, gjelina and fërgesë.

4. Visit one of the Northern beaches – This area has some stunning beaches which are perfect for relaxing during the summer months and the beaches here are a lot quieter than those on the Albanian Riviera.

5. Get off the beaten track – Venture away from popular tourist spots and discover hidden gems throughout Shkoder including ancient churches, scenic mountain trails & natural springs.

6. Take out travel insurance- It’s always good practice to protect yourself with travel insurance when travelling abroad.

7. Dress conservatively- Although Albania is generally very relaxed about the dress code, it’s best not to wear revealing clothing while sightseeing around town, especially if you plan on visiting any of the mosques or churches.
