I stumbled upon Gjipe Beach during my hitchhiking trip in Albania. And let me tell you, it was one of the best travel experiences of my life!

The journey to Gjipe Beach itself is an adventure, as the beach is fairly inaccessible, but once I reached the beach, I was blown away by its beauty. The crystal clear water, surrounded by towering cliffs, felt like a slice of paradise on earth.

The best part? It was not overcrowded with tourists, unlike nearby Ksamil Beach.

I think that it’s one of the best beaches in Albania. But don’t just take my word for it, the beach has also been recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Even though it is a well-known beach in Albania, it remains crowd-free due to its remote location. This adds to the charm and authenticity of the beach, as you won’t find any loud music or crowds of tourists here.

Where Is Gjipe Beach Located?

Gjipe Beach is situated on the picturesque western coast of Albania, also known as the Albanian Riviera. This stunning coastline boasts some of the finest beaches in the country, stretching from Vlore all the way down to Ksamil.

If you’re looking for a beach getaway that offers both natural beauty and tranquillity, the Albanian Riviera has got you covered. You can explore the pristine shores, soak up the sun, and take in the breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea.

The Gjipe Beach location is in the Albanian Riviera, between Dhermi and Himara. It’s conveniently located just about 2 hours south of Vlorë and approximately 4 hours from Albania’s capital, Tirana.

Gjipe Weather And Best Time To Visit Gjipe Beach, Albania

The weather in Gjipe is typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. The peak tourist season is from June to August when the weather is warmest, but if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy more pleasant temperatures, consider visiting in May, September or October.

During these months, you’ll still get plenty of sunshine and warm weather – perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Plus, you’ll have the beach mostly to yourself!

How To Get To Gjipe Beach

Getting to Gjipe Beach is half the fun! The beach is situated at the bottom of a steep canyon, so getting down to it is a bit of a challenge but is definitely worth the effort. 

Here are the ways that you can get to Gjipe Beach:

Can You Drive To Gjipe Beach?

Technically you can drive directly down to the beach itself, but you will need a 4×4 vehicle and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend that you attempt it. The road is on the edge of a steep drop into the ocean and it isn’t really wide enough for most vehicles.

However, there is a small parking lot located halfway down the canyon. Most people park here and hike the rest of the way.

To reach the parking lot you need to follow a dirt track off of the main road. There is a sign at the top of the main road so you won’t miss it. But beware, the road down to the parking lot isn’t for the faint-hearted, it was even featured on an episode of World’s Most Dangerous Roads!

Once you reach the parking lot you will need to hike the rest of the way down to the beach. It is about 1.5km from the parking lot to the beach on a very rocky downhill track, It takes around 20 minutes to get down.

There’s very little shade as you are hiking down so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

Gjipe Beach Parking

The parking lot is just a wide clearing in the trees with enough room for a few dozen cars. There’s no need (or way) to pre-book, just find a spot and enjoy!

The price to park is 300 Lek (~£2.50 GBP/$3 USD) for the day, or 600 Lek (~£5 GBP/$6 USD) for overnight parking.

Gjipe Beach Bus

If you are travelling around Albania without a car you will need to take a bus or hitchhike to get to Gjipe Beach.

When I visited, I hitchhiked from Saranda to Himare and from there I was able to flag down a Furgon.

Furgons are minibuses that run along the coast and are by far the best method of public transport in Albania. They don’t run on a strict schedule and instead tend to leave when they are full. There aren’t designated bus stops along the route, but you can flag them down and they will pick you up if they have space.

If you are getting a furgon to Gjipe Beach,  just let the driver know and he will let you off on the main road at the top of the canyon. There is a small signpost pointing down to the beach, from there you will need to hike down to the beach.

Hitchhiking to Gjipe Beach

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to save some money, hitchhiking is a viable option for getting to Gjipe Beach. The locals in Albania are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making it a safe and enjoyable way to travel.

I’ve hitchhiked in Albania multiple times and have had nothing but positive experiences. After leaving Gjipe beach for the day I hiked up to the parking lot and was able to hitch a ride back to Saranda from there.

So if you’re not afraid to hitch a ride with strangers, give it a try! Just make sure to use common sense and trust your instincts when choosing who to accept rides from. 

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: When hitchhiking I always prefer to ride with young couples or families if possible, in my experience this is usually the safest option.

Gjipe Canyon Hike 

If you have gotten to Gjipe by bus or hitchhiking then you will need to hike down to the beach from the main road at the top of the cliffs.

For me, this was an incredible experience, as the hike itself was beautiful and the views from the top of the canyon were stunning. I did some great hikes in Albania and this was one of my favourites. 

I totally get that this may not be ideal for everyone, especially if you have any physical limitations. But trust me, if you are able, it’s worth it! Plus, once you get to the beach, you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved swim!

The start of the hike is clearly signposted from the road, but the trails aren’t really maintained so you might find the path to be a bit overgrown at points.

The hike takes around 45 minutes to an hour -depending on how often you stop to take pictures of the amazing views! It isn’t too strenuous but it is hot as there is very little shade.

There is a small viewing platform that juts out over the edge of the canyon. It’s a bit sketchy because it obviously hasn’t been well-maintained. There is a large hole where a pane of glass is missing so be careful and watch your step!

Gjipe Beach By Boat

If hiking isn’t your thing, don’t worry! You can also reach Gjipe Beach by boat from Jala or Himare.

This is a more expensive option but it’s also a fun way to see the coastline and take in the beautiful scenery. Also, arriving at a secluded beach by speedboat kind of makes you feel like you’re in a James Bond movie!

You can also rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards from Himare, Dhermi or Jala and paddle your way to Gjipe Beach by following the coastline. This is a great option for more adventurous travelers and it’s definitely on my to-do list for next time!

Gjipe Beach Tours

If making your way to Gjipe independently sounds overwhelming (totally understandable!) you can also take a guided tour to the beach.

There are a few tour companies that offer day trips to Gjipe Beach from Vlore, Sarande and even Tirana. This is a great option if you want to sit back, relax and let someone else take care of all the arrangements.

Some tours also stop at Grama Bay, which is another secluded beach that can only be reached by boat. 

Facilities At Gjipe Beach

Gjipe Beach is very rustic and the fact that it is mostly unspoiled is part of its charm. However, there are a few basic facilities available.

Eating And Drinking At Gjipe Beach

There are three cute little beachside restaurants. They’re pretty basic but still decent. The prices are quite affordable considering the location, and they even provide shade in the seating areas.

The restaurants are open from 8 am to 10 pm, offering a variety of options for a light lunch. You’ll find refreshing cold drinks to quench your thirst, and a range of ice creams to keep you cool.

Beers are reasonably priced, ranging from 300-500 Lek (~£2.50-£4 GBP/$3-$5 USD), while the dishes range from 500-1000 Lek (~£4-£8 GBP/$5-$10 USD).

I didn’t eat here so I can’t say if the food was good, but I did enjoy a tasty mango ice lolly!

Bathrooms & Showers At Gjipe Beach

There are some basic bathrooms and showers at Gjipe Beach which are managed by the campsite and restaurants.

It costs 100 Lek (~£0.80 GBP/ $1 USD) to use the shower, which is basically just a hosepipe with cold water. But it gets the job done and it’s better than having to use the sea for a quick rinse!

Chairs & Umbrellas At Gjipe Beach

There are a few sunloungers and umbrellas available on the beach as well as some deckchairs by the restaurants.

I believe the loungers cost around 300 Lek (~£2.50 GBP/$3 USD) to rent for the day, but I used them just for a couple of hours in the afternoon and wasn’t charged anything.

Shade At Gjipe Beach 

The beach is surrounded by stunning cliffs, so there are plenty of natural shaded spots throughout the day.

If you want some shade in the restaurants or loungers, it’s best to go early as they get taken quite quickly. You can also bring your own umbrella if you wish.

Activities At Gjipe Beach 

The main thing you will want to do at Gjipe Beach is simply lay back, relax, and soak up the sun. This will feel especially great after the hike down! You can also swim in the sea, the water is pretty shallow and calm so it’s great for taking a dip.

To add to the experience, you can rent snorkelling gear from one of the restaurants and explore the nearby coves and underwater life.

There are also kayak and paddleboard rentals available if you’re feeling more adventurous. There are a few small caves which you can paddle to and explore. Just be cautious of the tide.

There is also a volleyball net but you need to bring your own ball. I didn’t play volleyball myself but spent some time cheering on a group of local lads who were having a very spirited game.

The canyon is also a beautiful place to explore, with opportunities for hiking and rock climbing. Just make sure to have proper gear and be cautious of the terrain.

Overall, Gjipe Beach offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for any type of beach-goer.

Bunkers At Gjipe Beach

One unique feature of Gjipe Beach is the old bunkers scattered throughout the area.

These bunkers were built during the communist regime to protect Albania from potential invasions. While they may seem out of place on a tranquil beach, they serve as a reminder of Albania’s history and offer an interesting photo opportunity.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even climb on top of the bunkers for a better view of the beach and surrounding cliffs. However, be cautious as they can be slippery and unstable.

The bunkers at Gjipe Beach add a unique element to your visit and provide a glimpse into Albania’s past and are worth checking out while you’re there.

Gjipe Beach Camping

If you’re looking to extend your stay at Gjipe Beach, there is the option to camp overnight. There is a small campground located about 700 metres from the beach, in the canyon of Gjipe. Staying overnight is a great way to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of this hidden gem.

The campground is really nice and has everything you could need – from an awesome open-air bath and a beautiful garden to a cool bar and a chill picnic area. Oh, and did I mention they serve a delicious vegetarian breakfast every morning? And if you’re into yoga, they even offer classes!

If you don’t want to stay at the campground and have your own tent, you can also sleep directly on the beach.

I wild-camped on several beaches in Albania and had an amazing time. I didn’t have a tent but instead I just set up my sleeping bag on an empty sunlounger and slept under the stars.

Overall, camping at Gjipe Beach is an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend trying out if you’re up for it!

There are no hotels on Gjipe Beach or anywhere nearby. This is not surprising since the beach is literally located at the bottom of a canyon! 

However, if you’re not up for Gjipe camping or prefer a more traditional accommodation option, there are several hotels and guesthouses located in the nearby towns of Himara and Dhermi.

If you decide to stay overnight at Gjipe Beach, it’s important to pack appropriately for a camping trip. Here are some essential items to bring:
