Day 1 Morocco Itinerary: Marrakech Sightseeing
Welcome to Marrakech! Day one is all about getting to know the city and its rich history.
Medina
![Marrakech Morocco. 4 Days In Morocco: A Perfect Itinerary](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Marrakech-Morocco-1-768x1024.jpg)
Start your day with a walking tour of the Medina. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the historic heart of Marrakech, filled with narrow alleys, bustling souks (markets), and traditional riads (guesthouses). Take your time to wander through the maze-like streets and take in the vibrant sights, sounds and smells.
You can choose to wander around on a self-guided walking tour – If you do this I recommend using the maps.me app so you don’t get lost! However, do bear in mind that the medina can be chaotic and overwhelming for first-time visitors so you may feel more comfortable on a guided tour.
There is a free walking tour that takes place every day at 10am. The meeting point for the free tour is in front of L’Adresse Cafe & Restaurant in Jemaa El Fna Square.
The tour will guide you on a cultural adventure wandering through the streets of Marrakech to the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque. Standing tall at 77m, the Mosque’s minaret is a key landmark for getting around the city. Along the way, you’ll stroll through the Medina’s narrow alleys, and visit spots like the Mouassine Complex, Ben Youssef Mosque, Jamaa Elfna Square, and more.
💁🏻♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you would prefer a private tour, you can also arrange for a guide to take you around the Medina.
Souks
![Souks in Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Souks-in-Marrakech-1024x768.jpg)
After your walking tour, take some time to explore the souks of Marrakech. These bustling markets are filled with treasures and unique finds, from colourful spices and intricately woven rugs to handcrafted jewellery and leather goods.
Don’t be afraid to haggle – it’s part of the experience! Locals expect you to negotiate prices, so don’t be shy about negotiating for a better deal. Just remember to be respectful and polite in your interactions. I hated haggling at first, but once you get the hang of it, it can actually be quite fun and rewarding.
When shopping in the souks, keep an eye out for quality and authenticity. Some vendors may try to sell knock-off goods at inflated prices. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to walk away if something doesn’t feel right.
Make sure to also try some local street food, there are plenty of delicious sweet treats being sold on every corner or you can try a refreshing glass of mint tea.
💁🏻♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If bartering and haggling feel a little too intimidating for you, you can hire a private guide to show you around the souks and negotiate prices with the local vendors for you.
Bahia Palace
![Bahia palace Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Bahia-palace-Marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
Another must-visit attraction in Marrakech is the Bahia Palace. This stunning palace was built in the late 19th century and features beautiful courtyards, ornate decorations, and intricate tilework. I recommend that you take a tour to learn about the history of the palace and its former owners.
After exploring the palace, take a stroll through its gardens and relax in the peaceful oasis. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another world as you admire the lush greenery and colourful flowers.
If possible, try to visit the Bahia Palace during a weekday to avoid crowds. This will allow you to fully immerse yourself in its beauty and take your time admiring all of its details without feeling rushed.
🏰 I recommend taking a tour of the Bahia Palace so that you can fully appreciate the history and stories behind this stunning site.
The YSL Gardens (Jardin Majorelle)
![YSL gardens Marrakesh](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/YSL-gardens-Marrakesh-768x1024.jpg)
The YSL Gardens or Jardin Majorelle is another iconic attraction in Marrakech. This tranquil garden was once owned by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and features an array of unique plants, vibrant colours, and stunning architecture.
I loved spending time here because it’s a peaceful escape from the busy city streets. You can take your time wandering through the gardens, taking in all of its beauty and enjoying some quiet reflection.
There is also a small museum on site that showcases Yves Saint Laurent’s work and influence, giving you a deeper understanding and appreciation for this incredible space.
Just be aware that you are not allowed to take photos inside the museum, I got told off by a stern security guard when I pulled my phone out to snap a pic! However, you can take a pic outside of the museum next to the iconic YSL logo. It’s actually one of the most popular photo spots in Marrakech!
💁🏻♀️JJ’s Top Tip: I recommend that you pre-purchase skip-the-line tickets to avoid having to wait in line in the heat.
Sunset At Dardar Rooftop
![Dar dar rooftop marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dar-dar-rooftop-marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
For an unforgettable experience, head to Dardar Rooftop for sunset. This trendy rooftop bar offers stunning views of the city and is the perfect spot to watch the sky change colours as the sun goes down.
I recommend trying some of their delicious cocktails and traditional Moroccan dishes while you take in the breathtaking view. I had a really great mojito mocktail here and my friends said that the espresso martinis were fantastic too.
Jemaa el-Fna Square
![Marrakech main square at night. There are lots of people and lots happening](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/dorel-gnatiuc-nk04wlvSlgE-unsplash-1024x683.jpg)
After dinner, make your way to the iconic Jemaa el-Fna square. This bustling market comes alive at night with street performers, food stalls, and vendors selling all sorts of goods.
It’s a chaotic but exciting experience that truly captures the vibrant energy of Marrakech. I enjoyed sampling different street food and browsing through the various souvenirs. Just be prepared to haggle for a good price and expect some catcalling!
As always, remember to stay aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close. But don’t let that deter you from immersing yourself in the lively atmosphere and taking part in all the action.
Day 2 Morocco Itinerary: Atlas Mountains And Imlil Waterfalls
On your second day in Marrakech, take a break from the bustling city and venture out to the beautiful Atlas Mountains
Visit A Women’s Co-op
![Moroccan women making argan oil](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Moroccan-women-making-argan-oil-1024x768.jpg)
Along the way, make a stop at a women’s co-op where you can learn about traditional argan oil made by local women.
It’s a great opportunity to support the community and pick up some unique souvenirs. Just be sure to do your research first and visit a legitimate co-op that empowers and supports these women. There have been some reports of scam co-ops that exploit the local women and take advantage of well-meaning tourists.
Drive Through The Atlas Mountains
![Atlas mountains Morocco](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Atlas-mountains-Morocco-768x1024.jpg)
Continue your journey through the picturesque mountains, passing by small villages and enjoying stunning views.
Depending on the time of year, you may even come across snow-capped peaks or blooming wildflowers.
Be sure to have your camera ready, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
🗻 If you don’t want to drive yourself, this day trip is perfect for those looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in nature. Make sure to bring your camera on this day tour – you’ll want to capture these views!
Imlil Waterfalls
![Waterfall atlas mountains](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Waterfall-atlas-mountains-768x1024.jpg)
Today’s highlight is checking out the Imlil Waterfalls, a charming set of waterfalls near the little Berber village of Imlil. Situated in the High Atlas mountains, it’s where the trek to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak and Africa’s second-highest mountain, begins.
It’s an easy hike to the waterfalls and the route will take you past wildflower meadows and stunning viewpoints of Mount Toubkal in the distance.
The Imlil waterfalls are incredibly underrated and are often overlooked for the more popular Ouzoud waterfalls, but for me, the Imlil waterfalls are one of my favourite places to visit in Morocco.
The water from these falls runs down from the mountains so it’s both crystal clear and super cold! I took an empty bottle to fill up with the water and it was so refreshing to drink while taking in the beautiful scenery.
After you’ve had your fill of photos and refreshing drinks, continue on towards the village of Imlil. Here, you can support the local community by purchasing handmade crafts and products from local artisans.
🗻 This day trip includes a hike to the waterfalls and lunch in Imlil village. It’s the perfect way to see the waterfalls!
Traditional Berber Lunch At Imlil Village
![](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/IMG_5116-768x1024.jpg)
No trip to Morocco is complete without trying some traditional Berber cuisine. And where better to do so than in the village of Imlil, surrounded by the Atlas mountains?
I highly recommend stopping at a local restaurant for lunch and trying dishes like tagine or couscous cooked in traditional clay pots over an open fire. Not only is the food delicious, but it’s also a great way to support the local economy and experience the culture firsthand.
I ate lunch at a beautiful local restaurant with a terrace that overlooks the mountains.
You don’t need to worry if you have dietary requirements. I’m vegan and there was plenty for me to eat. I had a delicious vegetable tagine and the most amazing freshly cooked bread.
Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with some of the locals, they are incredibly friendly and welcoming. You may even get some insider tips on hidden gems in the area.
Make sure to thank your hosts for the delicious meal before you continue with your day.
Relax At Your Riad
![Riad with pool Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Riad-with-pool-Marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
After the drive back to Marrakech, take some time to relax and unwind at your riad. These traditional Moroccan homes turned guesthouses offer a tranquil oasis in the bustling city.
I highly recommend staying in a riad that has a pool and terrace.
You can spend some time lounging by the pool or enjoying a cup of mint tea on the rooftop terrace while taking in the views. It’s the perfect way to recharge before heading out for more exploration.
Don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful architecture and intricate details of your riad. Each one is unique and showcases the rich history and culture of Morocco.
🤩 My favourite riad in Marrakech is Riad Rafaele. It is pure luxury for a reasonable price, and the couple who own it are some of the nicest people I have ever met!
Dinner At Lao Restaurant
![](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/IMG_5713-1024x768.jpg)
For dinner, I highly recommend Lao Restaurant. It offers a fusion of Asian and Moroccan cuisine that will satisfy all taste buds. It’s situated in the modern new town area of Marrakech, outside of the medina so you can enjoy a different side of the city.
The atmosphere feels really cosy and welcoming, especially with the lanterns and traditional decor setting the mood. You’ll love the view from where the restaurant is located on the top floor of the building—it’s absolutely stunning!
This was one of my favourite restaurants in Marrakech.
Day 3 Morocco Itinerary: Hamman Spa & Agafay Desert
The last two days have been jam-packed! So today, take some time to relax and enjoy a slower pace.
Traditional Hamman Spa
![Spa in Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Spa-in-Marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
Start your day with a traditional Hamman experience. A Hamman is a steam bath that has been a part of Moroccan culture for centuries. It’s the perfect way to cleanse and rejuvenate your body.
An authentic and luxurious Hamman experience can be found in the medina at Le Bain Bleu. They use natural ingredients like argan oil and black soap for an indulgent spa experience.
After your Hamman, treat yourself to a massage or other spa treatments for the ultimate relaxation. You deserve it! Trust me, it’s the perfect way to unwind after all the exploring you’ve been doing.
💆🏻♀️I recommend this luxury experience which includes pick up and drop off from your hotel or riad
Agafay Desert
![Agafay desert Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Agafay-desert-Marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
In the afternoon, head out to the Agafay Desert for a unique and unforgettable experience. This desert is often referred to as the “Desert of Marrakech” due to its close proximity to the city. The Agafay desert may not be the first desert that comes to mind when you think of Morocco, but it’s definitely worth visiting.
I recommend treating yourself to an overnight stay at Caravan by Habitas, a luxury Agafay desert camp. Here you can spend your afternoon chilling by the infinity pool with incredible views of the desert and in the evening enjoy a glass of wine under the stars as you relax around the cosy firepit. It’s the perfect way to disconnect and experience the peacefulness of the desert.
Don’t forget to capture some stunning photos of the Agafay Desert during the golden hour – it’s a photographer’s dream! My friends and I had a great time staging a photoshoot with the beautiful backdrop of the desert.
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: If you don’t want to drive out to the desert yourself then you can join an overnight desert tour from Marrakech to get the same experience!
Day 4 Morocco Itinerary: Desert Activity & Return To Marrakech
Today you can choose to get up early to watch the sunrise over the desert or enjoy a long lie-in and a relaxed breakfast. Either way, make sure to take in the breathtaking views of the desert before heading back to Marrakech.
Camel Ride, Quad Biking Or Hot Air Balloon
![Orange Hot Air Balloon among Blue Sky](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/orange-hot-air-balloon-among-blue-sky-15011041-683x1024.jpg)
Start your day with a desert activity like quad biking, camel riding, or hot air ballooning. These activities offer a unique perspective of the Agafay Desert and are a thrilling way to start your morning.
I personally try to avoid camel rides as I never know if they are being well cared for, but if you do choose to go on one, make sure to do your research and choose a responsible tour operator.
After your activity, enjoy one final lunch at the camp before heading back to Marrakech. As you drive through the desert, take in the stunning views and reflect on your unforgettable desert adventure.
🎈 For those of us who love nature and adventure, hot air ballooning is a must-do in the Agafay Desert. Soaring over the desert in a balloon provides an unparalleled view of the landscape and is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
Return To Marrakech
![Koutoubia Mosque](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/khalid-el-hadrami-aKuceSAAcGU-unsplash-719x1024.jpg)
Once you arrive back in Marrakech, take some time to rest and relax after your desert excursion.
You can also use this time to explore any remaining sights or markets that you may have missed earlier in your trip or squeeze in an extra activity such as a cooking class or street food tour.
Dinner At Les Jardins Du Lotus
![jardin lotus Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/jardin-lotus-Marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
For your last dinner in Marrakech, I recommend dining at Les Jardins Du Lotus. This restaurant offers a beautiful setting with delicious modern Moroccan cuisine.
This is one of the most instagrammable restaurants in all of Marrakech, so don’t forget to snap some photos while enjoying your meal.
Best Time To Visit Morocco
![Pool in Agafay desert Morocco](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Pool-in-Agafay-desert-Morocco-768x1024.jpg)
Overall, the best time to visit Morocco is during the spring (March to May) or Autumn/fall (September to November). These seasons offer pleasant weather with moderate temperatures and fewer tourist crowds.
If you prefer warmer weather and don’t mind larger crowds, summer (June to August) can also be a good time to visit. However, keep in mind that temperatures can reach up to 100°F (38°C) in some areas and it is not recommended to visit the desert during these months.
Winter (December to February) can be a bit chilly, especially in the desert regions, but it is still a beautiful time to visit with lower prices and fewer tourists.
Where to Stay In Marrakech
![Pool at riad marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Pool-at-riad-marrakech-768x1024.jpg)
My favourite place to stay in Marrakech is the beautiful Riad Rafeale.
This traditional Moroccan riad offers a peaceful and authentic experience with its stunning decor, rooftop terrace, pool, spa and delicious breakfast.
Getting To Morocco
![Screenshot of Google Map showing the location of Marrakech in relation to the rest of Morocco and the neighbouring countries.](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Marrakech-Map-1024x650.png)
Morocco is easily accessible by air, with major airports in Casablanca and Marrakech. You can also enter the country by ferry from Spain to Tangier.
Getting Around Morocco
![Main square Marrakech](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Main-square-Marrakech-1024x768.jpg)
Once in Morocco, there are various transportation options to get around including trains, buses, taxis, and car rentals. It is recommended to book a private driver or join a tour group for longer distances and to explore more remote areas.
I also recommend pre-booking a private airport transfer to avoid taxi scams.

Other Places To Visit In Morocco
![desert in morocco](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/desert-in-morocco-1024x768.jpg)
If you have more than four days to explore the country outside of Marrakech, some of my top recommendations include:
- The blue city of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains
- The historic city of Fez with its medina and souks
- The coastal town of Essaouira for a relaxing beach break
- The stunning Sahara Desert, Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes for a once-in-a-lifetime experience
- Ait-Ben-Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular filming location for movies and TV shows.
- Casablanca, the largest city in Morocco with its bustling markets and famous Hassan II Mosque.
To truly experience all that Morocco has to offer, I recommend staying at least 7-10 days. This will allow you to visit multiple cities and regions, try different types of cuisine, and immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of this beautiful country.
