I’ve visited Marrakech several times. I’ve visited as a solo female traveller, with my partner, and on a girl’s trip with a group of friends. Each time I had a slightly different experience, so I think that I can give you a balanced view.
So, is Marrakech worth visiting? The short answer is: absolutely!
This vibrant city has so much to offer and will leave you with unforgettable memories. From the bustling markets and stunning architecture to the warm hospitality of the locals, there is something special about Marrakech.
However, I don’t believe that Marrakech is a destination that is well-suited for everyone.
Marrakech can be overwhelming at times, especially for first-time visitors. The chaotic streets, constant haggling at the markets, and language barrier can be a bit daunting. If you’re someone who prefers predictable and organized trips, then Marrakech may not be the best fit for you.
But if you’re open to new experiences, can cope with culture shock and don’t mind a bit of adventure, then I highly recommend adding Marrakech to your travel bucket list!

It is often commonly mistaken as the capital of Morocco, but in fact, the capital is Rabat. However, Marrakech is the most popular city with tourists. Morocco receives around 14 million visitors a year, with the majority visiting Marrakech.
What Makes Marrakech Special?
Marrakech has a long and storied history that dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by the Almoravid dynasty. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by various empires and civilizations, including the Berbers, Arabs, and Europeans.
This diverse blend of cultures can be seen in the city’s architecture, cuisine, and customs.
From the bustling markets of the old city, or “medina,” to the tranquil gardens and palaces of the new city, Marrakech offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors. Its architecture, food, music, and art all reflect its rich history and make it a truly special place to visit.
Is Marrakech Worth Visiting? – 12 Reasons To Visit Marrakech
I love Marrakech, as I mentioned before, I have visited several times and will probably be back for another visit in the future. Here are 11 reasons why I love Marrakech…
1. The People And Hospitality
The people of Marrakech are known for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature. From the locals in the markets to the staff at hotels and restaurants, you will always feel welcomed and taken care of.
Marrakesh is one of those places where people will go above and beyond to be accommodating, you can expect to be invited for mint tea and have friendly conversations with strangers.
2. The Beautiful Architecture
The architecture of Marrakech is a stunning blend of traditional Moroccan and Islamic styles with Andalusian influences. The intricate details, vibrant colours, and beautiful arches make it a feast for the eyes.
From the grand mosques to the riads (traditional Moroccan houses), every corner of Marrakech is filled with architectural wonders. You’ll find yourself wanting to stop for a photo shoot at every turn.
🏰 One of my favourite spots to admire the impressive architecture is the Bahia Palace, a former royal residence with stunning mosaics and gardens.
3. The Shopping
The souks, or markets, of Marrakech, are an essential part of the city’s identity. You can find anything and everything here – from spices and textiles to traditional Moroccan lamps and hand-crafted leather goods.
Get lost in the maze-like alleys and haggle with shopkeepers for a unique souvenir. Just be sure to brush up on your bargaining skills beforehand.

4. The Rich Culture
Marrakech is steeped in culture and history, making it a fascinating place to visit. From the ancient Medina to the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa square, you’ll be immersed in Moroccan culture and traditions.
Be sure to attend a traditional Moroccan meal at a riad or take part in a cooking class to learn about the delicious local cuisine. You can also visit one of the many museums and galleries to learn about the country’s art, history, and customs.
5. The Adventures
For thrill-seekers, Marrakech offers plenty of opportunities for adventure. Take a trip through the desert or go quad biking in the rugged terrain outside the city. You can even go hot air ballooning for a unique and breathtaking view of the city.
And for those looking to get off the beaten path, there are plenty of day trips and excursions available to nearby villages and natural landscapes.
🗻I took a day trip to the village of Imlil in the Atlas Mountains and had an incredible experience hiking and interacting with the locals. It was a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and allowed me to truly appreciate Morocco’s natural beauty.
6. The Riads
Staying in a traditional Moroccan riad is an experience in itself. These beautiful homes are typically converted into small boutique hotels, offering a cosy and intimate stay with plenty of cultural charm.
Many riads also offer hammams (traditional steam baths) and other spa treatments for a truly relaxing and rejuvenating vacation. So why stay in a regular hotel when you can immerse yourself in the local culture and hospitality at a riad?

7. Experience The Desert
No trip to Marrakech is complete without a visit to the Desert. The Agafay desert is the closest desert to Marrakech. Here you can go quad biking, visit a luxury desert camp, and spend a night under the stars for an unforgettable experience.

I’ve visited both deserts and can assure you that the unique landscapes and cultural experiences are not to be missed. So don’t forget to add a desert excursion to your Marrakech itinerary!

For nature enthusiasts, Marrakech has plenty to offer. From the lush Majorelle Garden and serene Menara Gardens to the breathtaking Ouzoud Waterfalls and picturesque Ourika Valley, there are endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.
You can go hiking in the Atlas Mountains, visit a traditional Berber village, or even spend a day at one of the many beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coast.
9. The Food
Moroccan cuisine is a delicious fusion of Mediterranean, Arabic, and African influences. In Marrakech, you’ll find an abundance of flavorful tagines, couscous dishes, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Be sure to try some local street food like sizzling kebabs and tasty Moroccan pancakes. And don’t forget to top it off with a cup of traditional mint tea.

The city also has efficient transportation systems, including taxis and buses. And with the majority of locals speaking English and French in addition to Arabic, communication won’t be a problem.

One of the best things about Marrakech is that you can experience luxury without breaking the bank.
From spa treatments and shopping in the souks to dining at high-end restaurants, there are plenty of affordable options for indulging in a bit of pampering.

Things To Know Before Going To Marrakech
Now that I’ve told you the things that I love about Marrakech, let’s explore some of the things that you should be aware of before deciding to visit Marrakech.
I don’t think that Marrakech is suitable for everyone. So if you are uncomfortable with any of the following, then it may not be for you.
Things to know about Marrakech…
Haggling
As with many other countries, haggling is a common practice in Marrakech. This can be an enjoyable experience for some, but it may also make others feel uncomfortable or intimidated.
I found haggling to be really uncomfortable at first, as it felt too much like arguing and I’m a girl who hates confrontation! But after I tried it a couple of times, I got the hang of it and even found it to be a fun challenge.
If you’re not sure how to haggle or are not comfortable with it, don’t worry! There are plenty of fixed-price stores in Marrakech where you can shop without having to negotiate.
If you do plan on haggling, remember to always be respectful and don’t get too caught up in the bargaining.
Catcalling
Catcalling is, unfortunately, a common occurrence in Marrakech, especially for solo female travellers. You will inevitably get catcalled every time you walk down the street, so it’s important to be mentally prepared for this and not let it ruin your trip.
While it may be uncomfortable and frustrating, in my experience the men aren’t actually being aggressive, most of the time they are misguidedly trying to flatter you so that you will buy something from them.
My best advice is to try to remain calm and avoid engaging with the person catcalling you. It’s best to ignore them and continue on your way.
Scams
I love Morocco, it’s a beautiful country with a fascinating culture and so many unique experiences to be had. However, there is one huge downside to Morocco and that is the risk of being scammed!
Nowhere else in the world have I encountered as many blatant scammers as I have in Morocco, especially in Marrakech. It’s such a shame because it puts a bit of a dampener on an otherwise fantastic trip. But don’t let that scare you off from visiting, just be aware and prepared to deal with it.
If someone approaches you offering to guide you or take you somewhere, always be cautious. It’s best to politely decline and continue on your own. Also, be wary of anyone who offers you a “free” gift or invites you into their shop for tea. These are common tactics used by scammers to lure unsuspecting tourists into buying overpriced items.
Overall, just use your common sense and trust your gut. If something seems too good to be true or makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s probably a scam. Don’t let it ruin your trip, but also don’t be afraid to assert yourself and say no.
ATMs Don’t Always Work
In many parts of Morocco, ATMs can be unreliable and may run out of cash or simply not work. It’s always a good idea to have some extra cash on hand in case you have trouble accessing your money.
Additionally, make sure to notify your bank about your travels beforehand so they don’t flag any transactions as suspicious and freeze your account.

Cultural Differences
Marrakech is a Muslim country and therefore has many cultural differences that may be unfamiliar to some travelers. For example, wearing revealing clothing or public displays of affection are not acceptable in public. It’s important to respect the local customs and dress modestly while exploring the city.
The daily call to prayer can also be alarming if you have never heard it before. During my first trip to Marrakech, I was travelling with my then-boyfriend. He came from a very sheltered background and had never experienced other cultures before, so when he first heard the call to prayer it really scared him as he didn’t know what it was.
But It’s just a part of daily life in Morocco. I actually think it’s very beautiful and love to wake up at sunrise to hear it!
Try to embrace the different cultural practices and learn from them rather than being afraid or judgmental. It’s all a part of the amazing experience that travelling provides!

Don’t be afraid to ask locals for advice or clarification if you’re unsure about something. Open-mindedness and willingness to learn can go a long way in creating positive experiences while travelling.
It’s Easy To Get Lost
The streets of Marrakech can be quite confusing and it’s easy to get lost, especially in the medina (old city). But don’t panic if you find yourself wandering off track. Just find your way back to the central square and you re-orientate yourself from there.
Try to avoid looking like you are lost or confused as scammers often take advantage of lost tourists. Walk with confidence and take note of landmarks to help guide you back if needed. And remember, getting lost can lead to unexpected discoveries and adventures!

Marrakech Is Chaotic
Marrakech can be chaotic and overwhelming at times, but it’s all part of its charm. Embrace the hustle and bustle of the busy markets, the vibrant colours and scents, and the constant sounds of street performers and vendors.
Take breaks when needed and find a quiet spot to people-watch or sip on some mint tea. Don’t try to pack too much into one day, instead take your time to fully experience and appreciate the city’s lively atmosphere.

Animal Cruelty In Marrakech
As an animal lover, I saw many instances of animal cruelty in Marrakech that I found really upsetting. From snake charmers and monkeys on chains to camel rides and horses pulling carriages in extreme heat, it’s important to be aware of these issues and not contribute to them.
Instead, support ethical tourism by visiting animal sanctuaries or taking part in activities that promote conservation efforts. And if you do encounter instances of animal cruelty, consider speaking up and raising awareness and don’t let anyone pressure you to take part.

Jemaa el-Fna Square
This bustling main square is the heart of Marrakech and a must-visit. Here you’ll find food stalls, street performers, and plenty of opportunities for shopping.
Soak in the lively atmosphere while indulging in some delicious street food or haggling for souvenirs.

Bahia Palace
Escape the chaos of the city and step into this peaceful palace.
Admire the intricate architecture and beautiful gardens as you wander through the rooms once inhabited by a former sultan’s wives and concubines.

Majorelle Garden
Owned by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, this stunning botanical garden is a tranquil oasis in the middle of Marrakech.

The medina is the historic heart of Marrakech, where you can find traditional riads and bustling markets. It’s perfect for those looking for an authentic Moroccan experience.
On the other hand, the new town offers a more modern atmosphere with luxurious hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. This area is great for those seeking a bit more comfort and convenience during their stay.

How To Get Around Marrakech
The best way to get around Marrakech is by walking, as many of the city’s main attractions are within walking distance from each other.
However, you can also take a taxi or use ride-sharing apps Uber doesn’t operate in Marrakech but there are several alternatives.
Overall Travel Tips For Visiting Marrakech
- Be mindful of cultural norms and dress modestly while exploring the medina.
- Bargaining is a common practice in markets, so don’t be afraid to negotiate prices.
- Don’t miss out on trying the delicious street food and traditional mint tea.
- Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen as Marrakech can get very hot during the day.
- Learn about some of the common scams in Morroco before your trip so that you can be prepared to deal with them.

Like any popular tourist destination, pickpocketing and scams can occur. It’s important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings while exploring the city.
If you are a female solo traveller it is best to be aware of your surroundings when walking alone late at night and try to stick to well-lit and busy areas. If you’re unsure about something or feel uncomfortable in any situation, it’s always best to trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation.

The Best Time To Visit Marrakech
The best time to visit Marrakech is during the spring (mid-March to May) and fall (September to November), when temperatures are mild and pleasant. I’ve visited in March, April and November and had great experiences each time.
Summer months can be very hot, with temperatures reaching over 100°F (38°C), making it difficult to fully enjoy the city’s sights and activities. Winter months can also be quite cold, especially at night, which may not be ideal for outdoor exploration.
If visiting during Ramadan (the Islamic holy month), some restaurants and cafes may be closed during the day and alcohol may not be served. However, I’ve visited during Ramadan and found that most of the restaurants that specifically cater to tourists stay open, so you shouldn’t have any problems and certainly won’t go hungry!

So if you’re up for an adventure, open to new experiences, and willing to embrace the chaos, then Marrakech will reward you with unforgettable memories and an enriching cultural experience.
