Exploring the desert is one of the best adventures you can have while visiting Morocco, but when it comes to choosing between the two most popular deserts in Morocco – the Agafay Desert and the Sahara Desert – it can be a tough decision! Both have their own charm and appeal, but which one is the right choice for you?

I have visited and stayed overnight in both deserts and in this guide, I will share my personal experiences and insights to compare the two and help you make the best decision for your desert adventure.

First off, it’s important to appreciate that both the Agafay Desert and the Sahara Desert offer unique experiences that cater to different types of adventurers.

The Agafay Desert, located not too far from Marrakech, is known for its stark, moon-like landscapes and offers a more accessible desert experience that’s perfect for those short on time.

On the other hand, the vast Sahara Desert, stretching across several countries in Africa, promises an iconic desert adventure complete with rolling sand dunes, camel treks, and star-studded overnight stays.

Whether you’re looking for a quick escape or an immersive desert expedition, both deserts will generously fulfil your wanderlust.

I’m going to break down exactly what you can expect from each desert, from the activities to accommodations, to help you decide which is best for your trip.

Let’s start with the Agafay desert…

Is Agafay Desert Worth Visiting

I visited the Agafay desert during my most recent trip to Morocco and I really enjoyed it. It was an extremely different experience to my previous trip to the Sahara and I appreciated the diversity in my desert adventures.

One of the major highlights of Agafay is its proximity to Marrakech, making it an ideal day trip for those who want a taste of the desert without committing to an overnight stay.

The landscape itself is also quite unique – with its rocky terrain, you’ll feel like you’re on another planet! Despite being closer to civilization, the desert still offers a sense of peaceful isolation.

If you do choose to stay overnight, then the accommodation choices are a lot more luxurious than what you get in the Sahara. Here many of the luxury camps have large infinity pools, restaurants, comfortable beds and some even have private hot tubs!

So if you’re short on time but still want a unique desert experience with some added luxury, Agafay is definitely worth visiting.

Agafay Desert Landscape

Agafay’s landscape is quite different from the Sahara desert. If you come to the Agafay desert expecting endless rolling sand dunes then you will be very disappointed!

The Agafay desert is not a sand desert, but rather a stone desert. The scenery is dominated by rocky hills, wadis (dry river beds), canyons, and even small oases.

But don’t let the lack of sand deter you – the Agafay desert has its own unique charm and beauty. The rocky terrain gives off a moon-like atmosphere, making it perfect for photography and hiking.

Agafay Desert Weather

Before planning your trip to Agafay, it’s important to note the weather conditions. In general, the best time to visit is from September to November or from March to May when temperatures are cooler and more pleasant for outdoor activities.

I visited in April and the temperature was around 26°C (79°F) during the day, which was perfect for sunbathing by the pool.

During the summer months (June-August), temperatures can reach up to 37°C (98.6°F), making it unbearably hot for many tourists. However, if you do visit during this time, be sure to bring plenty of water and stay hydrated!

During the winter months, temperatures can drop significantly at night, so be prepared with warm layers. Overall, the weather in Agafay is generally sunny and dry year-round.

How To Get From Marrakech To Agafay Desert

One of the main selling points of the Agafay Desert is its proximity to Marrakech.  It’s only about a 40-minute drive from the city, making it a popular day trip destination.

To get to Agafay from Marrakech, you can either rent a car or take a taxi. If you choose to rent a car, be aware that the roads can be rough and tricky to navigate. I would recommend hiring a local driver or going on a guided tour to make the journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Marrakech directly to your accommodation in Agafay. This is a convenient option, as the driver will know the area well and can drop you off right at your doorstep. Just be sure to negotiate the price beforehand!

Agafay Desert Camps

There are some gorgeous desert camps to choose from in the Agafay Desert. Most of them have a very luxurious vibe but are actually surprisingly affordable!

I recommend treating yourself to an overnight stay at Caravan by Habitas, a luxury Agafay Desert camp. I stayed here and absolutely loved it!

You can spend your afternoon chilling by the infinity pool with incredible views of the desert and in the evening enjoy a glass of wine under the stars as you relax around the cosy firepit. 

It’s the perfect way to disconnect and experience the peacefulness of the desert.

Agafay Desert Dinner

If you’re not able to stay overnight in the desert, don’t worry! You can still experience the magic of the Agafay Desert with a dinner or sunset tour.

There are lots of options for an evening tour to the Agafay Desert, most of them offer dinner and a show as well as round-trip transportation from your hotel in Marrakech.

The food available is delicious. Due to its proximity to Marrakech, it is easy to get fresh ingredients to the desert camps and most of them have fully-functioning restaurants and bars, so you can expect plenty of high quality dishes.

Agafay Desert Activities

The Agafay Desert also offers a variety of activities for those looking for adventure.

You can go on a camel ride through the desert, quad biking or even take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise! Hiking and photography are also popular activities in the area.

I spent most of my time in Agafay just relaxing by the pool and exploring the beautiful desert landscapes, but if I visit again I will definitely try out some of these activities, the hot air balloon ride sounds amazing!

Agafay Desert Camel Ride

Camel rides are the most popular activity in the Agafay Desert but there is a lot of debate about whether this is ethical or not – PETA says that it isn’t, whereas the Born Free Foundation say that camel riding is fine as long as the camel isn’t overloaded.

I did a camel trek when I first visited Morocco (when I was young and uninformed) and although I did enjoy it, I now know better and would not do it again.

I don’t ever promote animal tourism on this site, so I won’t be linking to any camel tours. However, If you do choose to go for a camel trek, please make sure that the animals are treated well and handled responsibly.

Can You See The Stars In Agafay Desert?

Yes, you can! Despite its proximity to the city, you can still see plenty of stars in the Agafay Desert. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a shooting star!

In comparison to the Sahara Desert, the skies in the agafay are less clear (the amount of stars I saw in the Sahara was unreal!) but I would still say it’s worth staying up to do some stargazing.

Just make sure to bring warm clothes and a blanket as the desert can get quite cold at night. And don’t forget to turn off any unnecessary lights, so you can fully appreciate the beauty of the starry sky above you.

If you’re short on time, a day trip to the Agafay Desert is a great option. It’s only about an hour’s drive from Marrakech, making it easily accessible for a quick escape from the city.

There are plenty of tour companies that offer day trips to the desert, and they usually include activities like ATV rides or access to the pools at the luxury camps.

What To Pack For A Trip To The Agafay Desert?

If you’re planning a trip to the Agafay Desert, here are some essential items to pack:

• Sunscreen and hat: The desert sun can be intense, so make sure to protect your skin with sunscreen and a hat.
• Comfortable shoes: Whether you’re going on an ATV ride or exploring the desert by foot, comfortable shoes are a must.
• Layers: As mentioned earlier, the desert can get cold at night, so it’s important to bring layers to stay warm.
• Water bottle: Stay hydrated in the heat by bringing a reusable water bottle.
• Camera or phone: With stunning scenery, you’ll want to capture memories of your trip.
• Swimsuit: For taking a dip in the pool at your camp
• Cash: Some activities or purchases may require cash, so it’s always good to have some on hand.

What To Wear In The Agafay Desert

I recommend wearing loose-fitting breathable clothes such as a pretty maxi dress, jumpsuit or palazzo pants with a flowy top. 

If you suffer from the heat then avoid dark colours as they absorb heat, and opt for light-coloured clothing instead.

And don’t forget to pack a swimsuit if you plan on taking a dip in the pool!

Now that we have discussed the Agafay Desert, let’s take a look at the Sahara Desert and see how it compares…

Is It Worth Going To The Sahara Desert In Morocco?

For me, the answer is a resounding yes! The Sahara desert in Morocco is truly an unforgettable experience.

I visited the Sahara on a 4-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga (the gateway to the desert). It was a major bucket list moment for me and a true adventure that I will never forget. I visited the Erg Chebbi desert region of the Sahara, but the Erg Chigaga desert region is also popular. 

The Sahara is a very different experience to the Agafay desert, given that it is more remote and isolated and the camps are a lot more basic – even if you choose one of the more modern glamping options!

It’s the sense of disconnect from the outside world that is truly special about a trip to the Sahara. Without access to Wi-Fi or modern amenities, you’re forced to slow down and appreciate the present moment.

The Sahara is the perfect desert for you if you’re seeking a unique and unforgettable adventure, and want to experience the wilderness in its purest form. However, if you’re looking for a bit more luxury and convenience, Agafay desert may be the better option for you.

Sahara Desert Landscape

At over 3.5 million square miles, the Sahara Desert is the world’s second-largest desert after Antarctica and the world’s largest hot desert. It crosses the borders of 11 nations, Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara.

I chose to visit the Sahara from Morocco as it is one of the more tourist-friendly and accessible regions of the desert. I visited the Erg Chebbi region, which is famous for its stunning sand dunes that can reach up to 160 metres in height.

The Sahara landscape is simply stunning! There are vast golden sand dunes as far as the eye can see, showcasing a beautiful range of colours, from deep oranges to soft pinks, especially at sunrise and sunset. The clear blue skies and bright sunshine make for the perfect backdrop for some amazing photos.

Sahara Desert Weather

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert from Merzouga is from October to April when the weather is cooler and more pleasant.

During this time, temperatures can range from 10-25°C (50 – 77°F) during the day and drop to 5-10°C at night. This makes for a comfortable climate for exploring the desert and spending a night under the starry sky.

I did my Sahara Desert trip in November and the weather was perfect, not too hot or too cold!

It is not advisable to visit the Sahara during the summer months (May-September) when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F) during the day and drop only slightly at night. This extreme heat can make it difficult to enjoy your desert trip and may even be dangerous.

There are often thunderstorms during August, which have been known to cause flash floods in the desert, so it’s best to avoid this time of year altogether.

How To Get From Marrakesh To Sahara Desert

The distance from Marrakech to the Sahara varies depending on which part of the Sahara you are going to, but on average it is around 600km (370 miles). Erg Chebbi is 553.6km (344 miles) from Marrakech.

While this may seem like a long journey, there are many tour companies and transportation options available to make the trip more manageable. It’s definitely worth the journey to experience the beauty and wonder of the Sahara Desert.

There are tons of cool sights to check out on the way, so why not turn it into a road trip? That’s what I did when I visited, and it was a blast. You’ll get to soak in the different landscapes and local vibes as you head to the Sahara.

I stopped at the Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley on my way to Erg Chebbi.

If you’re not up for a road trip or tour, there are also options for buses, trains, and flights from Marrakech to Merzouga desert.

Best Sahara Desert Camps

There’s no better way to really soak in the Sahara Desert than camping under the stars! The vast sand dunes and clear night skies create a magical camping spot that’ll make you feel like a true adventurer!

There are a range of different camping options in the Sahara. You can choose to camp in traditional Berber tents or opt for a more luxurious glamping experience with all modern amenities. Either way, it will be an unforgettable experience.

I chose to stay at a very basic desert camp which was essentially just a tent made of blankets and a sleeping mat on the floor.

I was aiming for a rugged, back-to-basics vibe to get that nature connection, but I get it – not everyone’s into that kind of camping! So, pick what works for you!

Sahara Desert Food

The food on offer at the camps in the Sahara is a lot more basic than the Agafay Desert –  so don’t expect restaurant-style meals!

However, the simplicity of the food is part of the charm. You’ll typically be served Moroccan dishes such as tagine and couscous cooked over a campfire.

If you’re a picky eater or have any dietary restrictions, don’t worry! The camps are very accommodating and will do their best to cater to your needs. I’m vegan and they were happy to make a delicious vegetable tagine for me.

And don’t forget to try some traditional mint tea – it’s a staple in Moroccan culture and is the perfect way to warm up after a chilly desert night!

Sahara Desert Activities

From climbing huge sand dunes to sandboarding, stargazing, and dancing around the campfire, there are endless activities to keep you entertained during your stay. 

But the best activity of all is simply taking in the breathtaking beauty of the Sahara – whether it’s watching a mesmerizing sunset or gazing up at millions of stars in the clear night sky. It’s truly an awe-inspiring experience and one that will stay with you forever.

Without a doubt, the Sahara Desert is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. Away from any light pollution, the sky is incredibly clear and you can see millions of stars twinkling above you.

Some camps offer astronomy tours where you can learn about different constellations and even get a chance to use a telescope.

But even if you’re not into stargazing, simply lying on a bedouin-style rug and looking up at the vast night sky is an unforgettable experience.

The easiest way to visit the Sahara desert from Marrakech is to book a tour. There are a bunch of different Morocco desert tours available so you can find one that suits your travel style.

You’ll find everything from group tours with basic accommodation to private luxury experiences and everything in between. You can even charter a helicopter to fly you to the Sahara!

I chose to book a private 4-day tour and I couldn’t have been happier with it.

For the Sahara Desert, I would recommend practical clothing over cute dresses.  Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will protect you from the sun and heat.

My go-to outfit was a pair of lightweight, breathable pants and a long-sleeved shirt to keep the sun off my skin. I also brought a hat and sunglasses to protect my face and eyes, as well as a scarf to cover my head if needed.
