No trip to Morocco is complete without visiting Jemaa El Fna Square in Marrakech.

This bustling and chaotic square is filled with food stalls, performers, and vendors selling everything from souvenirs to traditional goods. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture and try some delicious Moroccan street food and fresh juices.

The square is best visited in the evening, this is when it really comes alive! 

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Jemaa El Fna square can be extremely noisy, chaotic and overwhelming, so if you suffer from sensory overload or noise sensitivity then I recommend using some noise-reducing earplugs. There are also plenty of cafes around the square’s edge where you can find a quiet spot to watch the chaos from a safe distance.

2. Visit The Atlas Mountains 

The Atlas Mountains are one of my favourite places in Morocco. I’ve taken a day trip there from Marrakech and have also spent a few days road-tripping through the stunning scenery, it never fails to take my breath away.

There are plenty of hiking trails, waterfalls and traditional Berber villages to explore in this mountain range. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even climb Mount Toubkal – the highest peak in North Africa!

3. Spend A Night In The Sahara Desert 

There’s no arguing that the Sahara desert is a unique travel destination worthy of your Morocco bucket list.

At over 3.5 million square miles, the Sahara Desert is the world’s second-largest desert after Antarctica and the world’s largest hot desert. It crosses the borders of 11 nations, Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara.

Morocco is one of the most tourist-friendly and accessible regions for exploring the Sahara desert.

You can experience a night under the stars in a traditional Berber camp, climb to the top of giant sand dunes, and watch mesmerizing sunsets over the vast desert landscape. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of shooting stars!

Visiting the Sahara was one of the best adventures that I’ve ever had. Trust me, you won’t regret adding this to your Morocco itinerary.

4. Ride A Camel Through The Desert

Camel rides are one of the most popular activities in Morocco, so I couldn’t write a Morocco bucket list without mentioning it.

However, there is a lot of debate about whether camel rides are ethical or not – PETA says that it isn’t. In contrast, the Born Free Foundation says camel riding is fine as long as the camel isn’t overloaded.

I typically don’t promote animal tourism on this site, but I will admit that I did a camel trek when I visited the Sahara Desert. I was young and uninformed and although I did enjoy it at the time, I now know better and would not do it again.

If you do choose to go for a camel trek, make sure that the animals are treated well and handled responsibly. Almost every tour available in the desert includes camel riding. In my experience, you can talk to tour operators and skip the camel ride segment of the tour if you don’t feel comfortable with it.

5. Step Back In Time At Ait Ben Haddou

Located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village that looks like something straight out of a fantasy. It’s no wonder it has been used as a filming location for many movies and TV shows, including Game of Thrones, Gladiator and The Mummy.

The best way to experience this UNESCO World Heritage Site is by taking a trip to the nearby city of  Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco”. From there, you can join a tour or hire a guide to explore Ait Ben Haddou and learn about its rich history and culture.

6. Explore The Blue Streets Of Chefchaouen

If you’re in need of some peace and tranquillity, head to the charming town of Chefchaouen. Despite being one of the most Instagram-famous places in Morocco, the town is actually surprisingly quiet!

Known for its blue-painted streets and buildings, this picturesque town is perfect for a relaxing stroll or a quiet cup of mint tea.

Take your time to wander through the winding alleyways and admire the unique architecture and colourful doorways. Along the way, you’ll also come across shops selling traditional Moroccan handicrafts and souvenirs. Don’t forget to capture some Instagram-worthy shots of the stunning blue walls!

7. Learn To Haggle In The Souks Of Marrakech

No trip to Morocco is complete without a visit to the bustling souks of Marrakech. These vibrant markets are filled with stalls selling everything from spices and herbs to leather goods and traditional clothing.

While shopping in the souks can be overwhelming, it’s also a great opportunity to practice your haggling skills. Take your time browsing through the various stalls, and don’t be afraid to negotiate for a better price. Remember, haggling is a common practice in Morocco and vendors expect it.

I found haggling to be really uncomfortable at first, as it felt too much like arguing and I’m a girl who hates confrontation! But after I tried it a couple of times, I got the hang of it and even found it to be a fun challenge.

Just remember to be respectful and friendly while negotiating, as this will help you get the best deal possible. And if all else fails, walk away – chances are the vendor will call you back with a better offer!

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: Haggling is a part of the culture and you are expected to participate! The first price you are quoted will always be up to 10x the ‘real price’,  so be prepared to negotiate until you get a fair price.

8. Enjoy A Traditional Moroccan Hammam 

A Hamman is a steam bath that has been a part of Moroccan culture for centuries. It’s the perfect way to cleanse and rejuvenate your body and is a must-try for any visitor.

Most hammams consist of several rooms with varying temperatures, from hot to cold. You’ll start by sitting in a hot room to relax your muscles, then move to a warm room where you will be scrubbed down with black soap and exfoliated with a Kessa glove. Finally, you’ll end up in a cool room to refresh and rejuvenate your skin.

Not only is the hammam experience incredibly relaxing, but it also has numerous health benefits. It helps improve circulation, detoxify the body, and leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.

9. Visit Jardin Majorelle

The Majorelle Garden – also known as the YSL Gardens or Le Jardin Majorelle – is a famous garden in Marrakech and is definitely a must-visit spot.

I’ve visited Marrakech several times and the YSL gardens are one of my favourite parts of the city!

This stunning garden was designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle and later bought by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. It features a variety of exotic plants, vibrant colours, and beautiful architecture.

Make sure to take your time exploring the gardens and don’t miss the Berber Museum, which showcases traditional Moroccan art and culture. And of course, snap some photos at the iconic blue villa.

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: Tickets must be purchased in advance online. You will be given a time slot to enter the garden but you may still need to wait in line for a short while to be let in. I didn’t have to wait for very long but it was hot so make sure to bring water and sunscreen.

10. Eat A Moroccan Tagine And Drink Moroccan Mint Tea

No trip to Morocco is complete without trying a traditional Moroccan tagine and sipping on some delicious mint tea.

Tagine refers to both the dish and the cone-shaped cooking pot it’s cooked in. It typically consists of meat (chicken, lamb, or beef), vegetables, and spices stewed together for hours. The result? A mouth-watering blend of flavours!

Pair your tagine with a refreshing glass of Moroccan mint tea, known for its aromatic blend of green tea, mint leaves, and sugar. It’s the perfect drink to cool down after a hot day exploring the city.

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: If you are a vegan traveller like me, you don’t need to worry. Most restaurants in Morocco offer delicious vegan and vegetarian options, such as vegetable tagines. So you can still experience the rich flavours of Moroccan cuisine without compromising your dietary preferences. You can even take a vegan cooking class to learn how to make traditional dishes at home.

11. Visit The Hassan II Mosque In Casablanca 

Don’t miss the chance to visit one of the largest and most stunning mosques in Africa – the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Built on the coast, this architectural masterpiece is a symbol of Moroccan craftsmanship and Islamic heritage.

It’s one of just two mosques in Morocco that welcome non-Muslim visitors. They offer guided tours in multiple languages when it’s not prayer time, so make sure to dress modestly. There’s also a nice little museum to check out!

Unusual Things To Do In Morocco

Now that we’ve covered some of the most popular and must-see attractions in Morocco, let’s explore some unique experiences you can have while travelling through this diverse country.

12. Go Underground At An Ancient Khettara 

Escape the heat and explore ancient underground tunnels used for irrigation in Morocco’s desert regions. These intricate systems, known as Khettaras, were developed by Berber communities over 1,000 years ago and are still in use today.

I visited an ancient Khettara on my way to the Sahara, it was fascinating to learn about this sustainable and efficient method of farming in such a dry region, and going down underground was a great way to beat the midday heat!

13. Find A Desert Oasis

Speaking of the Sahara, did you know that there are oasis towns scattered throughout the desert? These lush green pockets, surrounded by dunes and palm trees, provide a welcome respite for travellers on their way to or from the Sahara.

One of my favorite experiences in Morocco was visiting the Fint Oasis, near the city of Ouarzazate. It felt like a hidden paradise. Definitely worth a visit!

14. Drive Through Dades Valley and Todra Gorge 

Take a scenic drive through the stunning Dades Valley, known for its breathtaking landscapes and traditional Berber villages. Make sure to stop at Todra Gorge, a magnificent canyon with towering cliffs reaching up to 400 meters high.

I highly recommend hiring a private driver to take you on this journey. Not only will they be able to navigate the winding roads, but they can also provide valuable insight into the local culture and history.

15. Visit The Leather Tanneries In Fez

If you’re interested in traditional craftsmanship or want to take an epic photo, then a visit to the leather tanneries in Fez is a must!

These ancient tanneries have been operating since medieval times and offer a fascinating glimpse into the process of creating leather goods using natural dyes and methods.

There are three main tanneries in the city, with the most famous being the Chouara Tannery.

To view the tanneries, you’ll need to enter one of the surrounding leather shops, climb up to the roof terrace or balcony and look down into the pits. You don’t have to book a tour, but be ready to pay a small fee before leaving the shop if you don’t make a purchase – 10 dirhams (£0.80 GBP/$1 USD) should suffice.

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip:  Cow urine and pigeon droppings are used as part of the tanning process, so be prepared for the strong smell! But don’t worry, most shops near the tanneries will provide you with a sprig of mint to help mask the stink!

16. Get To Know The Berber People

A trip to Morocco wouldn’t be complete without getting to know the Berber people, the indigenous population of North Africa.

The Berbers have a rich history and culture that is still very much alive today. Take the time to visit a traditional Berber village, sample their delicious cuisine, and learn about their customs and traditions.

You can also opt for a homestay experience with a Berber family, which will give you an authentic insight into their way of life.

Be sure to engage with the locals, ask questions and listen to their stories. This is a great opportunity to learn and connect with the people of Morocco.

17. Swim In An Infinity Pool In The Desert

The Agafay Desert, located just a short drive from Marrakech, is known for its luxury desert camps.  These camps offer the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with stunning views of the desert landscape.

Many of these camps have gorgeous infinity pools, where you can spend your day relaxing as you enjoy the panoramic views of the vast desert. It’s a unique experience that must not be missed!

💁🏻‍♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: I recommend treating yourself to an overnight stay at Caravan by Habitas, a luxury Agafay Desert camp. I stayed here and absolutely loved it!

18. Visit The Atlas Film Studios 

Did you know some of your favourite movies and TV shows were filmed in Morocco? The Atlas Film Studios, located near Ouarzazate, have been the backdrop for blockbusters like “Gladiator”, “The Mummy” and “Game of Thrones”.

You can take a tour of the studios to see the impressive sets and learn more about the film-making process. It’s a must-visit for movie buffs and an interesting way to learn about Morocco’s contribution to the film industry.

When I visited the Atlas studios, we were the only tourists there and had the whole place to ourselves. A friendly security guard let us hold some of the props and even took photos for us!

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Entrance to the Atlas studios costs 80 dirhams (£6.30 GBP/$8 USD). The best way to get to the Atlas Film Studios is by hiring a private driver or joining a tour. You can also combine it with a visit to the nearby Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Outdoor Activities In Morocco

Morocco is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of activities to satisfy even the most adventurous thrill-seekers.  From skiing in the Atlas Mountains to surfing on the Atlantic coast, here are my top outdoor activities in Morocco:

19. Go Surfing 

Morocco is one of the best places in Africa to catch some waves!

Morocco’s Atlantic coastline is packed with point breaks. The most well-known surf spots are located just north of Agadir, near the fishing village and surfers’ paradise of Taghazout. But you can also catch some great waves in Essaouira, Safi, Rabat and Casablanca.

Taghazout is a great place to learn if you’ve never surfed before. There are plenty of beginner surf courses available at super affordable prices. You can also stay at a surf camp, where you’ll get to meet other solo travellers and make new friends.

If you’re already an experienced surfer, head to the more challenging spots like Anchor Point or Killer Point – named after the local pod of Killer whales that can be seen here.

The best time to surf in Morocco is from September to April when the waves are consistent and the weather is mild.

20. Go Skiing At The Highest Ski Resort In North Africa

Did you know that Morocco has a ski resort? Located in the High Atlas Mountains, Oukaimeden Ski Resort is the highest ski resort in North Africa. At an altitude of 3,268 m, it offers amazing views and a unique skiing experience.

The ski season here runs from December to March, with January and February being the peak months. You can rent equipment and take lessons at the resort, or bring your own gear if you prefer.

Oukaimeden is also a great place for snowboarding, with a snow park and several off-piste options for more experienced riders. And even if you’re not into skiing or snowboarding, the resort is still worth a visit just for the stunning scenery.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Oukaimeden Ski Resort is an easy day trip from Marrakech – perfect for a break from exploring the city.

21. Hike Through The Todra Gorge

For a different kind of adventure, head to the Todra Gorge – a series of limestone canyons in the High Atlas Mountains. The gorge is known for its spectacular scenery and challenging hiking trails.

You can explore the Todra Gorge on your own or join a guided tour with an experienced local guide who will show you all the hidden gems. Make sure to bring comfortable hiking shoes and plenty of water.

22. Kitesurfing in Essaouira

If you’re looking for a unique and thrilling experience, why not try kitesurfing in Essaouira? This coastal town is known as one of the best spots in the world for this water sport.

With strong and consistent winds, it’s the perfect place for beginners to learn how to kitesurf or for experienced kitesurfers to catch some waves. There are also several kite schools and rental shops in Essaouira, making it easy to get started.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: If you’re not into kitesurfing, Essaouira is still worth a visit for its charming atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and historic port.

23. Swim At The Cascades d’Ouzoud

Located in the Atlas Mountains, the Cascades d’Ouzoud is a series of stunning waterfalls that offer a refreshing break from the Morrocan heat. You can hike to the top of the falls for breathtaking views or take a dip in one of the natural pools.

I don’t recommend swimming under the main waterfalls as many boats are around. However the rivers around the falls offer plenty of swimming spots, and the farther you go from the main cascade, the calmer and more peaceful they get.

It’s also a great spot for picnics and wildlife watching – keep your eyes out for monkeys!

Adventure travel in Morocco is an experience not to be missed. With so much natural beauty, diverse landscapes and exciting activities, there are so many unique adventures to be had in this magical country.

Here are some of my top recommendations for the best Moroccan adventures:

24. Climb Sand Dunes And Go Sandboarding In The Sahara Desert 

The Erg Chebbi region of the sahara desert is famous for its towering sand dunes, reaching up to 160 meters high. This makes it the perfect spot for adrenaline junkies to try their hand at sandboarding – a popular activity where you surf down the dunes on a board.

It’s like snowboarding but on sand dunes instead of snow. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you do, it’s an exhilarating experience and is one of the best things to do in the Sahara desert! Plus, you’ll have some great stories to tell and memories to look back on.

Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and protective eyewear, and listen to your guide’s instructions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. And of course, don’t forget to capture some epic photos and videos for your friends to envy!

25. Soar Over Marrakech In A Hot Air Balloon

For a more peaceful yet equally thrilling adventure, you can take to the skies in a hot air balloon over the beautiful city of Marrakech. As you float above ancient mosques, bustling markets, and lush gardens, you’ll have stunning aerial views that are perfect for photos.

You’ll also get stunning views of the nearby Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains.

Most hot air balloon tours take off at sunrise, which is great as it means you have the rest of the day to explore Marrakech. They also usually include a traditional Berber breakfast served in a private tent once you land.

26. Summit Mt.Toubkal 

For experienced hikers and adventure seekers, summiting Mt.Toubkal is a must-do activity in Morocco. Standing at 4,167 meters (13,671 ft) above sea level, it is the tallest mountain in North Africa and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Atlas Mountains.

The trek to the top can take anywhere from 2-3 days depending on your pace, with most tours starting from the town of Imlil. Along the way, you’ll pass through traditional Berber villages and get to experience the local culture firsthand.

Although it can be a challenging hike, reaching the summit is an incredibly rewarding experience that will leave you with memories for a lifetime.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip:  It’s best to go with an experienced guide who knows the route and can provide the necessary equipment, as well as give you insight into the history and culture of the area.

27. Quad Biking In Agafay Desert

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, then quad biking in the Agafay Desert is the perfect activity for you. Located just outside of Marrakech, this vast desert landscape offers a unique and thrilling experience.

You can choose to go for a day trip or opt for a longer tour that includes an overnight stay in a luxury camp. Either way, you’ll get to explore the desert on your own ATV and take in the stunning views of the Atlas Mountains.

Don’t worry if you’ve never ridden a quad bike before, as most tours include a training session before setting off. Just make sure to bring your camera along, as you’ll definitely want to capture the stunning scenery and maybe even a few camels along the way.

Offbeat Places In Morocco

If you’re looking for Morocco’s off-the-beaten-track destinations, you’re in luck. The country is full of hidden gems that offer unique and authentic experiences. From ancient ruins to charming villages, here are some places worth adding to your Morocco to-do list:

28. Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

Tucked away in the Rif Mountains, this small town is Morocco’s holiest site and the final resting place of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Moroccan state. The town is full of pretty white-washed buildings, winding alleyways, traditional houses, and a beautiful square where locals gather to socialize.

With its charming scenery, lovely historic centre, and national significance, it’s surprising that this place isn’t more of a tourist hotspot. On the bright side, its hidden gem status means you can enjoy the place without the crowds!

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Moulay Idriss Zerhoun can easily be visited on a day trip from Fez. I recommend this private tour which also includes stops at Volubilis, an ancient Berber and Roman site in the mountains,  and the imperial city of Meknes.

29. Zagora

If you’re craving a desert experience but don’t want to deal with the crowds of tourists in the Agafay desert or you don’t have time to reach the remote Erg Chebbi dunes, then Zagora is the place for you!

Located in the Draa Valley, this small town is known as the “Gateway to the Sahara” and offers a more off-the-beaten-path desert experience. It doesn’t have the giant sand dunes of Erg Chebbi but it does have its own charm with beautiful palm groves, kasbahs, and a peaceful atmosphere.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: For the ultimate desert experience, I recommend taking this two-day tour to Zagora, where you can spend a night camping under the stars.

30. The Imlil Waterfalls

Located in the beautiful Atlas Mountains, the Imlil Waterfalls are a must-visit for nature lovers. The hike to the falls is relatively easy and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The Imlil waterfalls are often overlooked by tourists in favour of the more popular Ourika Valley, but this hidden gem is definitely worth a visit. The cascading waterfalls are truly a sight to behold, especially during the spring when they are at their fullest.

My favourite riad in Marrakech is Riad Rafaele. It is pure luxury for a reasonable price, and the couple who own it are some of the nicest people I have ever met!

Glamping In The Sahara Desert

For the ultimate desert experience, why not try glamping in the Sahara Desert? These luxury camps offer comfortable tents, delicious Moroccan meals and unforgettable camel rides across the dunes. The highlight of my trip was sleeping under a blanket of stars and waking up to watch the sunrise over the sand dunes.

Kasbah In Dades Valley

The Dades Valley is known for its stunning landscapes and traditional kasbahs (fortified villages). Staying in a kasbah is like stepping into a fairytale, with intricate architecture and beautiful views of the surrounding valley.

I really enjoyed staying in a kasbah in the Dades Valley, the view from our terrace was breathtaking and the food cooked by the local family who ran it was some of the best we had on our trip. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in authentic Moroccan culture.
