Here in Britain, we have mild wet winters so I love to travel during the winter months in search of some proper snow. I was not disappointed by my time in Vilnius, it was just what I needed to embrace the winter season.
I only spent four days in Vilnius but I definitely made the most of it and packed in a lot of activities and a lot of food!

Long-term readers of this blog will know that I love quirky and underrated hidden gem destinations and Vilnius fits that description for sure!
Visiting Vilnius in winter has a charm all of its own. There are plenty of exciting Vilnius winter activities and the city’s beautiful mish-mash of architectural styles, cobblestone streets and cosy cafes are all made even more magical when covered in snow.
Imagine wandering through the charming Old Town with snowflakes falling around you. It’s a winter wonderland that you won’t want to miss.
Plus, visiting Vilnius in winter means avoiding the crowds of summer tourists and getting a more authentic experience of the city. You’ll also find cheaper prices for accommodation and flights during this off-peak season.

Before we dive into all the amazing things you can do in Vilnius during winter, let’s address the elephant in the room: the cold weather!
Yes, it is cold in Vilnius during winter but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring this beautiful city. With the right clothing and mindset, you can have an incredible time when you visit Vilnius in winter.
The average temperature in Vilnius during winter is around 4°C to -7°C (39°F to 19°F). However, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop even lower.
You can expect to see some snow during your time in Vilnius. So make sure to pack plenty of warm layers, a thick coat, gloves, a hat and good-quality boots.
As long as you wrap up warm you won’t have a problem and there are a ton of cosy bars and cafes to pop into if you need to take a break from the cold.

Enjoy The Winter Festivities
Winter in Vilnius means lots of festive celebrations and events! From Christmas markets to ice skating rinks, there’s plenty to keep you entertained during the colder months.
In December, the main square in Vilnius Old Town transforms into a Christmas market with stalls selling traditional foods and drinks, handmade gifts, and more.
It’s one of the lesser-known Christmas markets in Europe and is still kind of a hidden gem so there are fewer crowds than some of the bigger Christmas markets in Europe.

Hot Air Balloon Vilnius
Taking a hot air balloon ride is one of the most popular activities and is a must do in Vilnius!
You can do it all year round but I highly recommend taking a hot air balloon flight over Vilnius during winter. Not only is it a unique experience but the views of the snow-covered city are absolutely breathtaking. Plus, you’ll get to see the stunning surrounding countryside from above.

Take A Free Walking Tour
I always recommend taking a walking tour to get to know a new city and it’s one of the best free things to do in Vilnius. You shouldn’t skip this activity just because of the cold weather!
There are a few free walking tour companies in Vilnius that offer tours throughout the year. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their city, making it a great way to learn about Vilnius’ history and culture.
🥾 I took this free tour and really enjoyed it. The guide even stopped the tour halfway through so that we could warm up with a coffee break!
Visit The Museums
Spending an afternoon in a museum is a great way to keep warm! Vilnius has a variety of museums to choose from, such as the Museum of Illusions, the KGB Museum and the National Museum of Lithuania.
🏫 I really enjoyed exploring the KGB Museum. Although it was devastatingly sad at times, it was also a fascinating insight into Lithuania’s history under the occupation of the Soviet Union. If you really want to go in-depth into the history then I recommend booking a guided tour of the museum
Explore Uzupis
Uzupis is a small neighbourhood in Vilnius that declared itself an independent republic in 1997. It’s known for its bohemian atmosphere and unique street art.
The concept of Uzupis as an independent state started as a joke (they celebrate their independence day on April 1st!) but they take the joke very seriously and now have their own constitution, flag and currency.
In the winter, Uzupis is even more charming with snow-covered cobblestone streets and cosy bars serving up hot drinks and delicious food.
Plus, you can get your passport stamped at the Uzupis ‘Border Control’, a fun souvenir to take home.

Climb Gediminas Tower
Gediminas Tower is a must-visit attraction in Vilnius, no matter the season. However, during winter, it’s even more special. The tower sits atop a hill overlooking the city and the views of snow-covered Vilnius from the top are simply stunning.
Don’t let the cold weather stop you from climbing to the top! Just make sure to wear good boots as the path is steep and can get slippery with snow.
💁🏻♀️ JJ’s Top Tip: Tickets to enter the tower are €8, but to be honest, the views from the base of the tower are still pretty great so you should only pay to go inside if you are super interested in the history as they have a few small exhibits inside. If you just came for the views then save yourself the cash and take your pictures from outside the tower.
Visit Trakai Castle In Winter
Just a short bus journey from Vilnius is the famous Trakai Castle, one of Lithuania’s most iconic sights. During winter, this castle looks like it has been plucked straight out of a fairy tale with the frozen lake surrounding it.
When I visited I was the only tourist there and had the whole place to myself!

Dog Sledding Vilnius
Dog sledding is a quintessential winter activity and you can do it just outside of Vilnius!
This experience is available from January to March and is suitable for all ages. It’s a great way to get up close and personal with some beautiful huskies. Plus, gliding through the snow-covered forests surrounding Vilnius on a sledge is an unforgettable experience.

The Christmas markets in Vilnius are a must-visit during the holiday season. The main market takes place in Cathedral Square and is filled with traditional wooden huts selling handmade gifts, decorations, and delicious food and drinks.

The Procession Of The Three Kings (Epiphany)
One of the biggest celebrations in Vilnius during January is Three Kings Day, also known as Epiphany. This religious holiday is celebrated all over Lithuania but Vilnius hosts one of the largest and most festive events.
Every year there is a procession on the 6th of January. The procession takes place in the square near the town hall at 4.30pm.
Orthodox Christmas In Vilnius
While most of Europe celebrates Christmas on December 25th, Orthodox Christians celebrate it on January 7th. In Vilnius, there is a large Russian Orthodox community and they celebrate this holiday with a special program of events in Cathedral Square.

I absolutely loved visiting Vilnius in winter. But let’s be real for a second, it does get VERY cold! Like below-freezing temperatures kind of cold. Make sure you pack lots of warm clothes, including thermals and a good quality coat.
Here are some essentials you should bring:
A warm jacket: Opt for a down-filled parka or a heavy-duty winter coat to keep you warm in freezing temperatures. Make sure that it’s water-resistant too!
Thick sweaters and woollen layers: Layering is key when visiting Vilnius in winter. Bring plenty of warm sweaters, woollen socks, and long-sleeved shirts to stay cosy.
Thermal underwear: You’ll want to wear thermal tights and a long-sleeve thermal vest as a base layer under your clothes to keep you warm.

I stayed at Downtown Forest Hostel and Camping. The dorm rooms were spacious, the bathrooms were clean and it was great value for money.
I also enjoyed the cosy communal areas and spent a few hours each evening sitting by the fireplace with a beer and a good book.
How To Get Around Vilnius In Winter
Vilnius is a fairly small and walkable city but if you don’t want to walk in the cold then I recommend getting a taxi or using a ride-sharing app.
Uber and Bolt both operate in Vilnius but I found that Bolt offered a more reliable service with less wait times.
