Luckily, Uber is available in Lithuania. However, it only operates in the capital city of Vilnius and even there it can still be difficult to get a ride.

I have personally experienced long wait times for an Uber in Vilnius and have heard from other people that it can be almost impossible at certain times.

Yes, there is Uber in Lithuania! 

As a traveller to Vilnius, I can say that it’s definitely worth considering using ride-sharing apps like Uber. Not only does it offer convenience and safety features, but it also helps support the local economy by providing additional job opportunities for drivers.

However, my experience with using Uber in Vilnius was a bit hit-and-miss.

The first time I used Uber in Vilnius I had no problems. I hailed an Uber to take me from the airport to the hostel where I was staying and it was a breeze. I was able to get a ride instantly and didn’t have to wait longer than five minutes for the driver to arrive.

But on subsequent occasions, I faced long wait times and even had trouble finding an available Uber during peak hours.

When I needed to get a ride back to the airport at the end of my trip, I could not get an Uber. There were no drivers available and my trips kept getting cancelled. I tried for around 45 minutes to get a ride and even walked into a busier part of town, hoping there would be drivers in that area but eventually, I had to give up.

Bolt In Lithuania

While Uber may be available in Vilnius, it’s not always the most reliable option. But don’t worry, there is an alternative to Uber in Lithuania – Bolt.

Bolt is another ride-hailing service that operates in Lithuania and it seems to have more drivers available than Uber in Vilnius. So if you’re having trouble getting an Uber, try using Bolt instead.

When I couldn’t get a ride to the airport with Uber I decided to try Bolt and was matched with a driver instantly! I wish I had thought to use Bolt in the first place as it would have saved me 45 minutes of stress!

Another option for getting around in Lithuania is using other taxi apps. 

There are a few different ones available such as Taxi.lt and Etransport. These apps work similarly to Uber and Bolt, allowing you to hail a ride with just a few taps on your phone.

I have not personally used these apps in Lithuania, but I have heard good things from friends.

Vilnius Uber

Uber is available in Vilnius, but as my experience showed, it’s not always the most reliable option. However, it is still worth keeping the app on your phone just in case you can’t find a ride with Bolt or other taxi apps.

Bolt

Bolt is another ride-hailing service that operates in Lithuania and seems to have more drivers available than Uber in Vilnius. It is definitely worth downloading this app as a backup option for when Uber isn’t available.

eTAKSI

eTaksi is a popular taxi app in Lithuania that works similarly to Uber and Bolt. It has a user-friendly interface and allows you to pay for your ride directly through the app. This can be a great option if you don’t have local currency or want to avoid haggling with taxi drivers.

Getting From Vilnius Airport To City Centre

If you are arriving at Vilnius International Airport, there are several options for getting to the city centre. You can take a taxi from the pickup area outside the arrivals terminal or use one of the ride-hailing apps mentioned above. I used Uber at Vilnius airport and had no problems.

Pre-booking an airport transfer may be a good option if you are travelling in a group and have a lot of luggage and passengers. 

Another convenient option is taking a local bus. 3 buses run from the airport to the city centre, as well as a night bus.

Taxis in Vilnius are generally affordable, with the average price for a 10-minute ride being around 5-6 euros. However, it’s always a good idea to confirm the price with the driver before getting into the car. 

Some taxis may also have additional fees for things like luggage or late-night rides.

Here are the standard fares that you should pay for a local taxi in Vilnius, as of 2024:

Initial fare: €1,80
Waiting fee: €0,45 per minute

Day prices (06:00 to 22:00) per km: €1,45

Nights (22:00 to 06:00), weekends and public holidays prices per km: €1,80

I used the bus to take a day trip from Vilnius to Trakai castle. The staff at the bus station were super helpful and the bus was comfortable and warm.

Trains are another efficient way to travel around Lithuania. The national railway company, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai, operates trains that connect major cities within the country and also have international routes to neighbouring countries. The trains are modern and usually run on time.

Ferries

If you want to explore Lithuania’s beautiful coastline, taking a ferry is the way to go.

 There are regular ferries between Klaipėda, Lithuania’s third largest city, and other countries such as Germany and Sweden. 

You can also take a ferry to the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning sand dunes.
