Marrakech gets a bad rep online with many people stating that it is not safe (despite never having visited Morocco themselves!) However, as someone who has travelled there several times, I can confidently say that it is possible to enjoy the city at night without feeling unsafe.

Of course, like in any other destination, there are risks and precautions that you should take to ensure your safety in Marrakech. But with some common sense and an open mind, you can have a fantastic evening in Marrakech.

It is worth noting that Morocco has a relatively low crime rate and a much lower homicide rate than the USA. It is also ranked 84 on the Global Peace Index, which is considered medium on the state of peace scale (the USA is ranked 115 and considered low on the scale).

So you could argue that Morocco is safer than the US, which is generally considered a safe country.

One safety tip that I often see repeated online is that women should avoid venturing out after dark or walking alone at night. However, I don’t necessarily agree with this. Why should we have to limit our lives and experiences just because we are women?

One of the best things to do in Marrakech is to spend an evening in Jemaa el-Fna Square. It’s a bustling and vibrant hub of activity and has even been given UNESCO status due to its cultural significance.

The square comes alive at night and this is the best time to visit. It’s a must-see spot in Marrakech, and you shouldn’t have to miss out on that experience just because you are a solo female. So please don’t let fear hold you back from experiencing it after dark!

That being said, it is always important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings when travelling in an unfamiliar place. This rings true even if you’re exploring your hometown!

So let’s get into some practical safety tips for going out at night in Marrakech, so you can have a safe and enjoyable trip.

💁🏻‍♀️JJ’s Top Tip: Jemaa El Fna square can be extremely noisy, chaotic and overwhelming, so if you suffer from sensory overload or noise sensitivity then I recommend using some noise-reducing earplugs. There are also plenty of cafes around the square’s edge where you can find a quiet spot to watch the chaos from a safe distance.

In Marrakech specifically, there are a few things to keep in mind for a safe night out…

1. Stay In Well-Lit Areas

As with any city, try to stick to well-lit and busy areas at night. The streets around the main square, Djemaa el-Fnaa, and the popular tourist areas like the Medina and Guéliz tend to have more people.

During my solo travels, I did walk around the city at night without any issues. However, I always made sure to stick to well-lit and crowded areas.

It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If a certain street or area doesn’t feel safe, don’t hesitate to turn back or take a different route.

2. Know Your Surroundings

One of the best ways to stay safe in Marrakech is to know your surroundings. This means doing research before your trip and familiarizing yourself with the layout of the city, popular tourist areas, and any potential safety concerns.

It’s also a good idea to carry a map or use a navigation app on your phone to avoid getting lost.

I like to use the maps.me app, as it can be used offline. It can be difficult to get a strong signal in some areas of the city, especially within the walls of the medina, so I like to make sure I always have an offline map to avoid getting lost.

It’s also worth noting that some of the streets of the medina are closed at night so you will need to plan ahead and check that your route back to your accommodation will still be open at the time you wish to return.

3. Appear Confident When Walking Alone at Night

Taxis and other vehicles are not able to enter many parts of the medina so if you are planning on returning to your riad after dark you will need to walk at least some of the way.

While it’s generally safe to walk around the busy tourist areas of Marrakech at night, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and be extra careful when walking alone. This is especially true for solo female travellers.

If you find yourself walking alone, make sure to stay alert and confident. Walk with purpose and avoid looking lost or vulnerable. Walk with your head up, looking around rather than down at your phone or map.

It may also be helpful to carry a whistle or personal alarm device for added security.

Avoid strangers who offer unsolicited help or directions, I find that a firm and confident “No thank you” and continuing to walk usually does the trick.

4. Trust Your Instincts

As with any travel destination, it’s important to trust your instincts while in Marrakech. If something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, listen to that feeling and remove yourself from the situation.

If you’re approached by a stranger who seems overly friendly or persistent, don’t be afraid to firmly decline their advances and walk away. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Additionally, be cautious of scams such as fake tour guides or vendors selling counterfeit goods. Use common sense and do some research beforehand to avoid falling victim to these types of scams.

5. Be Prepared For Catcalling

Unfortunately, catcalling and street harassment can be a common occurrence in Marrakech. It’s important to not let this behaviour ruin your trip but also to be prepared for it.

If you do experience catcalling or unwanted attention, try to ignore it and continue on your way. If the situation escalates and you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to seek help from locals or authorities.

Personally, I found the constant catcalling to be annoying but non-threatening. The men were very vocal but not one of them ever tried to put their hands on me – even when I was walking alone at night!

Once or twice I had to firmly ask men to leave me alone but they always respected this and backed off immediately. You can also threaten to call the tourist police as they take these matters seriously.

As a general rule, I recommend avoiding eye contact and not engaging with catcallers to avoid potential escalation.

6. Use Licensed Taxis

When travelling at night or to unfamiliar locations, it’s always best to use licensed taxis. These taxis have meters and are regulated, ensuring you won’t be overcharged for your ride.

Avoid taking unmarked or unofficial taxis as these may not have meters and could potentially charge exorbitant fares. It’s also important to negotiate the price before getting into the taxi to avoid any confusion or disputes later on.

If possible, ask your hotel or a local for recommendations on trustworthy taxi companies. This will give you peace of mind while exploring Marrakech.

Unfortunately, there are many taxi scams in Marrakech, so it’s important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings when taking a taxi. Always keep an eye on the meter and make sure you are paying the correct fare.
