Are you wondering “Is Marrakech safe?” or looking for some general Marrakech safety tips? Look no further, I’ve got you covered!

Marrakech has a reputation for being a difficult destination for travellers – especially women. Although I wouldn’t recommend it as a first-time destination for solo travellers, I do think that its reputation as a dangerous city is a little unfair.

I’ve travelled to Marrakech on multiple occasions, with friends, with my partner, and as a solo female traveller. There have been a few sketchy moments, but generally, I’ve always felt just as safe as I do in any other city.

Marrakech can seem overwhelming and even a bit scary, especially if you are from North America or Western Europe and aren’t used to the bustling energy and cultural norms of Arabic/North African destinations.

However, with some basic precautions and a little knowledge, you can have an amazing time exploring the city and staying safe!

Let’s dive into my top Marrakech safety tips for travellers!

Is Marrakech Safe? – General Safety Statistics

Morocco is currently ranked 84 on the Global Peace Index, which is considered medium on the state of peace scale.

For context, other medium-ranked countries include France (ranked 67), the UAE (ranked 75) and the Philippines (ranked 115). The USA is ranked 131 which is considered a low state of peace.

In terms of violent crime statistics, Morocco has a homicide rate of 1.65 and has a reported 48.71 robberies per 100k people.

To put that into perspective the USA has a homicide rate of 6.38 and has a reported 86.24 robberies per 100k people.

Hopefully looking at these statistics will reassure you that you are unlikely to experience violent crime in Morocco. However, petty crimes such as bag-snatching, pickpocketing, scams and fake tourist guides are unfortunately quite common.

Terrorist Attacks In Morroco

I think that part of Morocco’s online reputation for being “unsafe” comes from the terrorist attacks that happened several years ago.

Islamic State followers murdered two female backpackers in December 2018. This was a tragic but extremely rare and isolated incident. However, a video of the attack has been spread online by white supremacists and far-right groups as a way to stir up anti-Islamic and anti-arab hate. 

It is important to remember that terrorist attacks can happen anywhere in the world, and Morocco has since stepped up security measures to prevent future incidents.

Morocco has not experienced any terror attacks in the last 5 years, and in December 2023, the United States State Department lauded the effectiveness of Morocco’s counterterrorism approach in its 2022 Country Report on Terrorism.

As a tourist, you are also unlikely to be targeted by any extremist group as they tend to focus on government or religious targets.

Is Marrakech Safe For Tourists?

Marrakech is considered to be a safe destination for tourists.

As with any city, there are certain safety precautions that you should take. The main thing you have to worry about is pickpocketing (this is true of any popular tourist destination!), but overall the rate of crime in Marrakech is relatively low.

However, safety can be very subjective depending on your personal circumstances and is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’  situation.

So, let’s take a look at safety for some specific demographics…

Is Marrakech Safe For Solo Female Travellers?

Marrakech is generally safe for women, but it’s always important to use your common sense and take extra precautions when travelling alone – this is true even when walking around your hometown alone!

A lot of people will tell you that it is advisable to stay covered up from head to toe and avoid walking alone at night. However, as someone who encourages adventurous solo female travel, I don’t agree with this.

As women, we shouldn’t have to limit our experiences or change our behaviour because of the actions of others.

My personal experience as a female traveller in Marrakech has always been positive, but I am a very experienced solo traveller and I always make sure to research and plan my trip beforehand.

I don’t recommend Morocco as a destination for first-time solo travellers, simply because it can be a challenging destination to travel to due to language barriers and different cultural norms.

I always suggest taking your first solo trip to somewhere where English is either the first language or widely spoken as a second language.

But if you are an experienced solo traveller with a few trips under your belt then Morocco is a great country to add to your list!

That being said, it is always important to be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and take necessary precautions like not accepting drinks from strangers and making sure you have a safe place to stay.

Catcalling is, unfortunately, a common occurrence in Marrakech, especially for solo female travellers. You will inevitably get catcalled every time you walk down the street, so it’s important to be mentally prepared for this and not let it ruin your trip.

While it may be uncomfortable and frustrating, in my experience the men aren’t actually being aggressive, most of the time they are misguidedly trying to flatter you so that you will buy something from them.

I always felt this behaviour was an annoyance rather than a threat, but it’s important to stay alert and keep walking if you feel uncomfortable.

Overall, Marrakech can be a great destination for solo female travellers. In addition to following general safety precautions, consider joining a guided tour or staying in a reputable hostel with other female travellers.

This will not only provide added security but also allow you to meet other like-minded women on your journey.

What Should I Wear In Marrakech As A Solo Female Traveller?

I get asked this question by my Instagram followers all the time! Morrocco is fairly liberal compared to many Muslim countries so you don’t need to stress too much about being completely covered up from head to toe.

My advice would be to dress modestly but comfortably. I wore outfits that showed my shoulders and my friends wore shorts without any issues.

Is Marrakech Safe For Couples?

Sexual activity between unmarried people and adultery is illegal for Moroccan nationals – this includes sharing a hotel room, particularly with foreign nationals. So avoid having a hook-up with a local and bringing them back to your hotel room as you could both end up in trouble!

The law regarding unmarried people sharing a hotel room does not generally apply to visiting foreign nationals, particularly in popular tourist areas. I stayed in several hotels with my boyfriend and had zero issues.

Although Morocco is much more liberal than some other  Muslim countries, there are still certain social expectations for both men and women. It is important to be mindful of these cultural differences and avoid public displays of affection, especially around religious sites.

Overall, Marrakech is generally safe for couples but it’s always a good idea to research the local customs and laws before your trip.

Is Marrakech Safe For LGBTQ+ Travellers?

Morocco has strict laws against homosexuality and same-sex sexual activity is illegal. This can make it challenging for LGBTQ+ travellers or couples to visit Morocco without facing discrimination or harassment.

Unfortunately, there have been reports of violence and harassment towards LGBTQ+ individuals in Morocco, so it is important to prioritize your safety at all times.

It is important to note that attitudes towards homosexuality vary across the country, with more conservative areas being less tolerant.

In Marrakech, there is a small but growing LGBTQ+ community and some LGBT-friendly travel agencies and establishments.

If you do choose to visit Marrakech as an LGBTQ+ traveller, it is best to be discreet and avoid any public displays of affection and consider booking a twin room if you are travelling as a same-sex couple.

Is Marrakech Safe For Families?

Marrakech can be a great destination for families, with plenty of activities that both kids and adults can enjoy. However, like any other city, it’s important to take necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.

When travelling with children, it is important to always keep them within sight and hold their hand in crowded areas.

Marrakech is known for its bustling markets, or souks, which can be overwhelming for young children. Make sure to establish a meeting point in case anyone gets separated and teach your kids what to do if they ever feel lost.

Is It Safe To Drive In Marrakech?

Driving in Marrakech can be chaotic and unpredictable, so it is important to exercise caution if you choose to drive during your visit.

Traffic laws may not always be strictly enforced and road conditions may differ from what you are used to at home. It is recommended to have an international driving permit and familiarize yourself with local traffic laws before getting behind the wheel.

Additionally, it is important to note that drunk driving is taken very seriously in Morocco and can result in severe penalties.

If driving does not seem like the best option for you, there are alternative forms of transportation such as taxis, buses, and trains that may provide a safer and more convenient means of getting around Marrakech.

Many parts of the medina are inaccessible by car anyway, so walking or taking a taxi may be your best bet. Ultimately, the decision to drive in Marrakech should be based on your comfort level and confidence in navigating unfamiliar roads and traffic patterns.

Are Taxis Safe In Marrakech?

Unfortunately, taxi scams are common in Marrakech and visitors should remain vigilant when taking taxis.

It’s helpful to have an idea of the average cost of a ride before getting in a taxi, as some taxi drivers may try to overcharge tourists. It is not rude to negotiate a fair price before starting your journey.

Some common scams include using fake taxi meters, fake taxi touts and relying on your unfamiliarity with the local currency to shortchange you.

To avoid these scams, it is best to use official taxis with meters and company logos. You can also ask your accommodation for a reputable taxi service to ensure your safety.

Overall, taxis can be a safe and convenient way to get around Marrakech as long as you remain aware of potential scams and take necessary precautions.

Is Uber Safe In Marrakech?

Uber does not operate in Marrakech. If you feel safer ordering a taxi through an app rather than hailing one on the street, there are a few alternatives to Uber that operate in Marrakech.

Is Public Transportation In Marrakech Safe?

Public transport in Marrakech is generally safe, but it may not always be the most convenient option.

It’s important to keep an eye on your belongings and stay aware of your surroundings when using public transportation. Pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas such as bus or train stations, so it’s best to keep valuables close to you at all times.

If you’re unsure about which route to take or how to purchase tickets, don’t hesitate to ask a local or someone from your accommodation for assistance.

Is The Food In Marrakech Safe?

The food in Marrakech is generally safe to eat, but it’s always important to use caution when trying new dishes. 

I’ve never had any problems with getting sick in Morocco and everything I’ve eaten has always been delicious!

Eating street food is a must-do experience in Marrakech!  However, it’s important to use caution when choosing which stall or stand to buy from.

Be sure to look for stalls that have a steady stream of customers and food that is being cooked in front of you. This ensures that the food is fresh and hot.

Be cautious about eating raw fruits and vegetables, as they may have been washed with contaminated water. And always remember to wash your hands before and after eating!

Is It Safe To Drink Tap Water In Marrakech?

If you are worried about contributing to plastic waste, there are several eco-friendly options available. You can bring a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter, or opt for refill stations at certain restaurants and hotels that use filtered tap water.

Areas To Avoid In Marrakech

As with any destination, certain areas in Marrakech should be avoided for safety reasons. This is true of any city.

There are dodgy areas that you shouldn’t enter as a tourist, but to be honest, you can not get to them unless you are going out of your way to find them and know exactly where you are going.
