Wondering if you can use Uber in Montenegro? I’ve got you covered!
Montenegro (and the rest of the Balkans!) is getting really popular with tourists, backpackers, and digital nomads these days. But you know what? The transport infrastructure hasn’t quite caught up yet!
Many of us from Western Europe or North America have gotten used to being able to instantly summon a taxi with the tap of a button using the Uber app. But Uber doesn’t exist in Montenegro. So what are the alternatives?
As a solo female traveller, I’ve always hesitated to hail a random taxi from the street because it just didn’t feel safe. Like many other women, I prefer using apps like Uber where there’s some level of accountability and I can easily share my location with friends. It provides that extra sense of security.
So when I was backpacking around Montenegro and needed a taxi, I had a bit of a stressful time trying to figure out what was the best alternative to Uber!
Luckily for you, I’ve done all the research and figured out the best taxi apps in Montenegro so you don’t have to stress!
🚗 You’ll need data to use taxi apps. Free WIFI isn’t always available in Europe so I suggest using an international eSim to avoid roaming charges. This eSim can be used in 190 countries around the world!

Hi, I’m JJ!
I’m a travel blogger with a passion for unique travel destinations, discovering hidden gems, and adventurous solo travel.
I’ve backpacked all around the Balkans and have gotten pretty good at figuring out the best ways to get around.
As a solo female traveller, I certainly feel safer if I can use a taxi app rather than just flagging down a random taxi in a city I don’t know.
I’ve created this guide to help you feel safer too!
I hope you enjoy my free guides and travel tips! If so, please consider supporting my work 💕

Unlike most of Europe, Uber doesn’t operate in Montenegro. So you won’t find Uber in Podgorica or Uber in Budva, or anywhere else in Montenegro! However, there are some great alternatives you can use to get around.
While there are other ride-sharing and taxi apps in the capital city of Podgorica, I couldn’t find any good alternatives to Uber during my stay in Kotor and Ulcinj.
The good news is that both of these places are pretty walkable, so it didn’t really cause any inconvenience. But it’s worth noting that if you’re planning to travel outside of Podgorica, it might be a bit more difficult to find alternatives.
4 Best Montenegro Taxi Apps And Uber Alternatives

If you’re planning on visiting Montenegro, here are some alternatives to Uber that you can try:
Nas Taxi
My go-to alternative to Uber in Montenegro is Nas Taxi.
This app is run by a local taxi company in the capital city, Podgorica. It functions similarly to the Uber app – you can easily order a taxi right from your phone, without having to remember any phone numbers or try and explain where you are.
It’s user-friendly and reliable, making it a great option for getting around the city.
Monte Taxi
Monte Taxi is another popular taxi app in Montenegro. One of the greatest things about this app is that it’s completely free and super easy to use. With just a single click, you can call a registered taxi without the hassle of waiting on hold or trying to flag down a taxi on the street.
Not only does it guarantee safety from any potential fake taxi scammers, but it also gives you peace of mind while travelling.
TeslaGo App
If you’re looking for a more premium and eco-friendly way to get around Montenegro, then look no further than TeslaGo.
This app offers luxury electric Tesla rides at reasonable prices. With highly trained drivers striving to make your ride as comfortable as possible, TeslaGo also provides additional benefits such as card payments, free Wi-Fi, free water, and two trunks for your luggage.
Plus, you can easily track your ride’s estimated time of arrival and cost right from the app. So why not treat yourself to a Tesla ride while exploring beautiful Montenegro?
GoMontenegro
This company specializes in chauffeur-driven airport transfer services for both individuals and small groups.
They operate 24/7 to and from the Podgorica and Tivat Airports, making it a great option for travellers arriving or departing by air.

There are taxis available outside of the arrivals terminal at Podgorica airport.
The Podgorica airport taxi price is fixed at €12 for a ride to the city centre. There are two taxi providers, Royal Taxi and Lider Taxi, that have contracts with the airport.
You can easily identify these taxis as they will have clear signage on their vehicles and the current price is displayed on a sign in front of the terminal.
If you prefer to book your ride in advance or would like an alternative private transportation option, you can also choose from various transfer companies located outside of the airport.

Private transfers provide a more luxurious and convenient option for transportation in Montenegro. This is especially recommended if you are staying in a different city such as Budva or Kotor, as it eliminates the need to find a taxi upon arrival.

Montenegro Taxi Tips
![](https://travelacrosstheborderline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/JasperArt_2024-01-17_12.04.50_upscaled.jpg)
- Make sure to agree on a price before getting into the taxi.
- If you are unsure of the route, use Google Maps or ask for recommendations from locals beforehand.
- Keep small change on hand, as taxi drivers may not always have change for larger bills.
- If possible, opt for a licensed taxi with a company logo and number on the side of the vehicle.
- Be wary of unlicensed taxis offering lower prices, as they may not have proper insurance or safety standards.
- In case of any issues or disputes, note down the license plate number and company information and report it to the authorities.
- During peak tourist season, taxi prices may increase due to high demand. Consider using other forms of transportation or walking if possible.
- Always prioritize your safety and comfort when choosing a taxi. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, do not hesitate to ask the driver to stop and exit the vehicle.
- Familiarize yourself with the average taxi fares for popular destinations before your trip to avoid being overcharged.
Other Ways Of Getting Around Montenegro

Aside from taxis, there are other convenient and affordable ways to get around Montenegro.
Rent A Car in Montenegro
Renting a car in Montenegro is a great way to explore the country at your own pace.
Rental companies can be found at major airports and cities, with prices starting at around €20 per day. Just make sure to have an international driver’s license and familiarize yourself with local driving laws.
Also, be aware that the roads outside of major cities aren’t always well maintained and the driving can seem really chaotic.

Buses in Montenegro
The country has a well-connected bus network, with buses running between major cities and popular tourist destinations. They are generally cheaper than taxis and offer a scenic way to travel.
The bus network is particularly extensive, connecting all major cities and towns. Tickets can be purchased on board or at bus stations, with prices starting at around €1 for short journeys.
I used the bus a lot during my time in Montenegro and found it to be a reliable and budget-friendly option. However, do keep in mind that buses can get crowded during peak season, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a seat.
Hitchhiking in Montenegro
If you’re feeling adventurous and on a tight budget, hitchhiking is also an option in Montenegro. I personally hitchhiked a lot during my time backpacking around the Balkans and found it to be safe and easy in Montenegro.
However, always use caution when hitchhiking and trust your instincts. Don’t hesitate to turn down rides if you feel uncomfortable and make sure to always let someone know your plans and route.
Montenegro Tours
If you prefer organized tours, there are plenty of options available in Montenegro. These tours offer a convenient way to explore the country with knowledgeable guides and often include transportation and meals.
Some popular tour options include:
City tours: Explore the history and culture of cities like Kotor and Budva with an experienced travel guide.
National park tours: Visit the stunning national parks of Montenegro, including Durmitor and Biogradska Gora.
Adventure tours: For adrenaline junkies, there are options for activities like white water rafting, speed boating, and hiking.
💁🏻♀️JJ’s Top Tip: The best tour I took in Montenegro was this speedboat tour. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Kotor. The speedboat will take you to visit the famous Lady of the Rocks Church, a hidden submarine bunker and allow you to swim in the blue cave. It’s great value for money!
Overall, whichever mode of transportation you choose in Montenegro, you’re sure to have a memorable experience exploring this beautiful country!
